Liverpool playing like champions again, says Southampton's Hasenhuttl

Diogo Jota’s early double set Liverpool on their way to a crushing 4-0 victory over Southampton on Saturday to move up to second in the Premier League standings.

The Portuguese forward steered home Andrew Robertson’s cutback to open the scoring after 97 seconds, before another simple finish following fine work from Mohamed Salah put Liverpool two goals up and in command inside 32 minutes.

Midfielder Thiago Alcantara added to his stunning goal against Porto in the Champions League in midweek with a third five minutes later and Virgil van Dijk helped himself to a fourth against his former club early in the second half.

Jota had a great chance to complete his hat-trick but could not connect from close range as Liverpool eased to a win that lifted them above champions Manchester City, who play West Ham United on Sunday, and one point behind leaders Chelsea.

Southampton had their moments but they could not cope defensively and the loss left them 14th in the standings.

Brighton and Leeds stalemate highlights crisis of attacking confidence at both clubs

It’s simultaneously true to say it was reasonable to expect that Brighton against Leeds would have been better than this, while also accepting that a Premier League match has seemingly never been more consigned to finish as a damp and unhelpful 0-0 draw.

Reaction from Tariq Lamptey

Brighton right-back and player of the match today, Tariq Lamptey spoke to Sky Sports following the game and outlined Brighton’s frustration at not getting the win. He said:

We would have liked to have won the game today but we played a quality side. We pushed and pushed but it wasn’t to be.

“We tried our hardest and we gave it our all, on another day they’d go in. We’ve just got to keep training hard now.

“My team-mates have been great whilst I’ve been out so I worked as hard as I could to create some chances and do my bit for them today.

“We’re playing against quality teams every week, it’s not easy to put the ball in the back of the net, so we just have to keep pushing.

“We go into every game looking to get the three points, the goal didn’t come but we look to the next game now.”

Brighton rue missed chances in draw with Leeds

Bright had 20 chances over the course of the 90 minutes with only four on target. Their expected goals rating of 1.8xg was the highest of the season without them converting a chance.january.

It’s a familiar, frustrating story for Graham Potter who must be thinking of bringing in a top quality finisher in January.

So what does that draw do to the table?

Leeds remain in 17th but move three points above the relegation zone. Brighton jump one place into 8th leapfrogging Manchester United who face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge tomorrow.

Full-time: Brighton 0 - 0 Leeds

90+3 mins: It all ends goalless. That seemed to be the way things were going since the restart of the second half. Brighton will feel as though they’ve dropped two points. They dominated the first half in particular. Leeds will be happy to come away with a point. They were far from their best and didn’t really kick into gear going forward.

Brighton 0 - 0 Leeds

90 mins: Three minutes of added time to play. Can someone, anyone, find a winning goal at the Amex Stadium?

Brighton 0 - 0 Leeds

88 mins: Save! It’s just not Brighton’s day! Joel Veltman makes a good run down the right side and picks out Solly March with a nice inside pass. March brings the ball into a central position before scuffing a shot at goal. Illan Meslier dives across to his left and palms the ball onto the inside of the post but instead of bouncing over the line the ball comes back into play, hits the goalkeeper and allows Meslier to scoop it up.

Brighton 0 - 0 Leeds

86 mins: The game’s getting a little tense now. Neither team wants to lose but both think they can win it. Leeds enjoyed a decent five minute period now it’s Brighton’s turn. They look for a way into the box from the left but Shackleton manages to drive them back.
