Jurgen Klopp’s side were by far the better team against Sheffield United but had to sweat for their 3-1 victory, with a top-class strike from the Argentinian with 14 minutes to go giving them control. Darwin Nunez’s 18th of the season – courtesy of a mistake from goalkeeper Ivo Grbic – had given the hosts a 17th-minute lead, only for Conor Bradley’s own goal just after half-time to ratchet up the tension.
The classy Mac Allister, one of the most composed players on the pitch, relieved that and substitute Cody Gakpo’s late effort was an added boost to the goal difference which could yet be crucial.

70’ - Liverpool 1-1 Sheff Utd
Konate is down and injured after Osula caught him and twisted his knee. Needs some attention, the centre-back - but after a few minutes he’s back on his feet.
Elliott crosses from the right and Diaz is ready to pounce - Ahmedhodzic just about clears. Robertson reloads for another cross and another corner but the Blades clear their lines.
66’ - Liverpool 1-1 Sheff Utd
Van Dijk rises to bullet a header at goal off a corner but Grbic parries it around the post! From the next corner Konate almost nods goalwards but the Blades have enough back to clear.
25 minutes or so remaining and Liverpool, now, must certainly raise their game - they’ve allowed it to drift to this point.
62’ - Liverpool 1-1 Sheff Utd
McAtee and Brereton Diaz off, McBurnie and Osula on for Sheffield United.
Salah and Gravenberch off, Elliott and Robertson on for Liverpool.
The Reds’ double sub was planned before the equaliser and Klopp went ahead anyway - a surprise to see Salah off perhaps.
GOAL! 58’ - Liverpool 1-1 Sheff Utd
Souza fires a ball wide, McAtee beats Gomez on the right and crosses deep for Hamer - he heads it down against Bradley’s boot, it bounces off the right-back and through Kelleher’s legs!
Out of nothing, Sheffield United are level!
54’ - Liverpool 1-0 Sheff Utd
Salah half-volleys at goal but it’s straight at the keeper, then he frees Nunez to shoot near-post - blocked by the defender. A little quicker though from the hosts, and they’ll need to be to find a second goal here.
Konate is now adjudged to have pushed over Brereton Diaz on the edge of the box - there was nothing in it at all and the striker, if anything, backed into the defender before going to ground.
Free-kick all the same...Hamer hits it on target but Kelleher has it all the way.
50’ - Liverpool 1-0 Sheff Utd
Gravenberch is down for Liverpool afer a kick to the heel. Looks fine to continue - it’s his first start back after an injury lay-off so he won’t want to miss out any more.
Szoboszlai delivers the free-kick from the left...too long for Van Dijk and Grbic claims it.
All a bit quiet and slow at the start of this half again as Klopp watches on.
46' - Liverpool 1-0 Sheff Utd
Back underway at Anfield. The hosts attacking the Kop end for the second half and looking for a second goal to send them back towards the top of the table.
HT - Liverpool 1-0 Sheff Utd
The Reds ahead at the interval - Nunez’s goal the difference. Smacked against him by the keeper, so not exactly a moment of magic, but it’s enough to have Liverpool ahead though Jurgen Klopp might want to see quite a bit more after the restart.
45+3’ - Liverpool 1-0 Sheff Utd
Final moment of the half. Nunez can’t quite reach a Salah cross. McAtee leads a counter and falls to ground on the edge of the box, nothing doing from the ref, but Bogle runs onto a loose pass and lashes one at the near post - good save from Kelleher!
44’ - Liverpool 1-0 Sheff Utd
Diaz does brilliantly to escape two challenge and raise the tempo, then he feeds Gravenberch - who slips as he shoots. Saved easily in the end.
A patient, clever passing move thereafter ends in Gomez teeing up Szoboszlai, and he forces Grbic into a save near his top corner.
Four minutes added on.
