Liverpool 3-1 Manchester City: The Reds win the first trophy of the season as Darwin Nunez’s debut goal sealed the win while Erling Haaland had a day to forget
Liverpool are the winners of the Community Shield for the first time in 16 years after a debut goal from Darwin Nunez wrapped up a 3-1 win over the Premier League champions Manchester City at Leicester’s King Power Stadium.
In a contest befitting of Liverpool and Manchester City’s intense rivalry last season, Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola’s teams produced a compelling match as new arrivals Erling Haaland and Nunez made their first competitive outings following big-money moves this summer.
Liverpool were sharp in the opening exchanges with Mohamed Salah threatening on the right wing, but it was Trent Alexander-Arnold who fired them ahead on 21 minutes as the right-back’s shot deflected off Nathan Ake.
Haaland had a couple of chances before the break, the best of which when he stretched for Joao Cancelo’s cross, but it was the other new signing Julian Alvarez who equalised for City after a lengthy VAR review.
Nunez also had chances to open his account but the Uruguay striker was involved in the decisive late penalty, as his header was blocked by Ruben Dias’ outstretched arm. Salah converted to restore Liverpool’s lead before Nunez added a late third to seal it, as Klopp added a Community Shield to his trophy haul at Anfield.
Haaland had an afternoon to forget after a late miss from six yards, as Liverpool gained revenge from two previous defeats in the Community Shield in 2019 and 2020. Follow live reaction from the Community Shield final, below:

Liverpool had a final attack before the break with Salah getting loose down the right. He looked for Diaz with a cross but Ederson leapt to collect it.

41 mins: Mahrez threatens again dribbling in from the right, before crashing into Thiago. He goes down and City want a penalty, but nothing is given.
Liverpool are meanwhile upset about a high boot from Cancelo on Alexander-Arnold. He caught him, but there was nothing more serious than that.

38 mins: Another City chance! City work it out to Mahrez, who finds an once of space to get a shot in on his left foot. It’s straight at Adrian.

36 mins: Another good moment for City as Cancelo gets down the left. His cross looks set for Haaland but Van Dijk gets across. Mahrez then threatens in the box but Robertson blocks, as De Bruyne’s cross then goes wide.

33 mins: Chance for Haaland! City break and a forward pass is brought down. Robertson does enough to challenge him and he’s falling as he shoots on target.
He then attempts a flying volley from Bernardo’s cross, but can’t get a proper touch and it goes over!

31 mins: Manchester City get their first sight on goal as Mahrez raced through - Adrian saved the shot but he was well offside. That Liverpool line was very high, but it worked.
Darwin Nunez then gets his name sung by the Liverpool fans as he comes out for his warm-up. In between, Thiago nutmegged what looked like two City players as they tried to close him down.

Moments before, Diaz did a stunning flick while bringing the ball down. Liverpool are enjoying themselves and looked fired up.

25 mins: Chances at both ends! First Van Dijk heads clear as Haaland shaped to shoot, before De Bruyne found the side netting from the angle.
Then Liverpool burst clear. Henderson passed inside to Diaz, who then moved it on to Firmino. The move slowed down, though, and Firmino sliced wide.
