Liverpool blew the chance to return to the top of the Premier League as Jurgen Klopp’s hopes of winning the title were hit by a shock defeat to Crystal Palace at Anfield.

Just days after Klopp promised a response following Liverpool’s 3-0 defeat to Atalanta in the Europa League, the Reds found themselves behind again as Eberehi Eze fired the Eagles into the lead in front of a stunned Kop.

Liverpool missed several chances before half time, with Wataru Endo clipping the bar, but the visitors were dangerous themselves and were inches away from doubling their lead as Andy Robertson cleared off the line.

The returning Alisson kept Liverpool alive in the second half, as Darwin Nunez missed a golden chance from point-blank range, Curtis Jones skewed wide when through on goal and Mohamed Salah’s shot was blocked by Tyrick Mitchell.

Crystal Palace held on to claim a rare Premier League away win at Anfield, but a second home defeat in four days leaves Liverpool now third in the title race behind Manchester City and Arsenal after blowing their advantage.

75’ - Liverpool 0-1 Crystal Palace

How?!

Another enormous chance for Liverpool and this time it’s Curtis Jones - he races through from the halfway line, holds off the defender chasing him back, draws Henderson out...and side-foots wide of the post!

He raises his shirt above his face in disbelief.

Alisson’s turn to produce a magnificent save! That’s an enormous hand to divert Mateta’s shot over the bar - which is a rocket from four yards!

No idea how this is still only 0-1.

Biggest chance of the game for Liverpool!

Jones and Szoboszlai combine brilliantly and as the keeper comes out, the Hungarian squares to give Jota a free shot at an almost open goal - but Clyne somehow produces a block out of nowhere!

Jones booked for pulling back Ayew.

Salah and Szoboszlai combine again down the right flank and the latter’s cross beats Henderson - but Andersen is there this time to scoop over the bar from inside the six-yard box.

Van Dijk reaches the corner and nods on to Jota - he stretches but cannot prod in from six yards. Liverpool have dominated on set pieces but they simply haven’t had the finishing touch. Klopp watches on and grimaces.

68’ - Liverpool 0-1 Crystal Palace

Jones can’t quite get on the end of a low cross from Gakpo, then Robertson’s cross is blocked - he wants a penalty for handball. Struck the arm of Clyne but not given and cleared by VAR.

A quarter of the match remaining for the Reds to find a way as they have so often this term.

Palace sub: Jordan Ayew on for Olise.

Nice move between Salah and Szoboszlai but this time it’s Alexander-Arnold who takes the shot and again it’s five yards over the bar.

Klopp turns to his bench once more and it’s a double sub this time, Cody Gakpo and Diogo Jota on for Nunez and Diaz.

60' - Liverpool 0-1 Crystal Palace

Alexander-Arnold struggling to find his passing range at the moment with a few short and long balls both only finding white shirts. He’s been out a long while but the Reds can’t carry passangers in this next half-hour.

Another corner creates havoc in the Palace box; first Salah can’t control to shoot and then next he tees up Szoboszlai - who fires miles over the bar.

Jones and Nunez combine now and Salah’s cross reaches Jones’ he says he’s fouled but the ref gives a corner.

From the delivery it’s nodded down to Nunez and he smashes in a volley from six yards...he has to score but somehow Henderson’s knee diverts it over the bar again!

Palace carve through Liverpool - Hughes’ reverse pass finds Eze and his ball is just ahead of Matetea, then Olise tees up Wharton and his shot is blocked.

Robertson, the best performer for the home team first half, tries to go out on the outside to create another chance but Nunez overruns it out of play.

And immediately, Liverpool must make a second substitution. Conor Bradley goes into a challenge and twists his knee and ankle beneath his opponent and he’s getting treatment, but he’s also leaving the pitch.

Trent Alexander-Arnold makes his comeback from injury.
