Potter on Brighton's trip to in-form Liverpool

A week removed from Liverpool’s demolition job on rivals Manchester United, Jurgen Klopp’s side host Brighton and Hove Albion with the same mentality. The Premier League title race appears set to be a relentless battle between the Reds, champions Manchester City and European champions Chelsea.

The Seagulls have also kicked on after flirting with relegation last time, putting in the type of results that their performances deserved last term, with Graham Potter guiding his side up to fifth in the table entering this weekend. Brighton will be eager to bounce back after a heavy defeat to City last time out, and victory will lift them into the top four and above West Ham United, while the hosts will be eager to take all three points to pile on the pressure on league-leaders Chelsea, though a point will be enough to take top spot on goal difference.

Despite dismantling United last week, Klopp maintains his side can improve, reiterating that his side must defend better: “The world is a bit like this: you win 5-0 against United and everything is perfect. Well, it was not. United had clear-cut chances which we gave them. We should not rely on luck or Ali [goalkeeper Alisson]. I saw the first half; we gave too much away. We have some really impressive scorelines but you don’t expect that to happen all the time and I have no problem with winning a game 1-0. That is where we have to be ready.” Follow live build-up, team news and minute-by-minute updates from Anfield:

HALF TIME! Liverpool 2-1 Brighton

An entertaining first half at Anfield is brought to a close! It’s been a 45 minutes of swings and big moments. First off, March had a golden chance to give Brighton the lead but was denied by Alisson and a minute later Henderson’s clinical finish gave the Reds the lead.

Mane then added home Oxlade-Chamberlain’s fine cross before he thought he scored his third, only for his blocked challenge on Sanchez to be ruled out for handball. But from potentially being three goals up, Mwepu curled in a fine goal from range to reduce Liverpool’s lead to one before the break.

Brighton are back in it, and what a goal it is from Mwepu! The ball is cut back to his at the angle, about 25 yards from goal, and he curls a stunning strike over Alisson and into the far corner! He scored it from crossing range, but he definitely meant that!

GOAL! Liverpool 3-0 Brighton (MANE 33’)

Disaster for Brighton and for goalkeeper Robert Sanchez! The Spaniard tries to clear a backpass from his line, with Mane closing him down. His clearance is blocked by Mane and ends up in the back of the net... but this is going to be checked.

Liverpool 2-0 Brighton

28 mins: Another chance for Brighton, they certainly haven’t been short of them in the first half. Trossard does brilliantly to chop inside Konate and keep a hold of the ball, before finding Cucurella in space. He plays a cross back towards goal where Mwepu is waiting, but he can’t keep the header down.
