Manchester City are reigning champions after beating Liverpool to the finish line in a neck-and-neck 2021/22 title race where a comeback win on the final day of the season against Aston Villa secured a fourth title in five years for Pep Guardiola's side.
Jurgen Klopp's Reds were on course for a quadruple last season but were forced to settle for just an FA Cup and Carabao Cup win and will return trying to win the title again just as they did in 2020.
It was a dramatic season for Chelsea a year ago with Roman Abramovich now replaced by Todd Boehly as owner in west London. He will want an instant return on his hefty investment at Stamford Bridge while Tottenham, back in the Champions League, will want to kick on once more too.
It's not all about the action at the top though with Fulham, Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest promoted to the top tier for 2021/22 and hoping to hold their own against the best English football has to offer and avoid the drop.

Liverpool have had the better chances and should have a healthier advantage in the game. However, they are giving Brentford too many chances in their half. The away side keep winning free-kicks around the box, with Konate and Fabinho already committing three fouls. it has allowed the away side to commit men forward, but Jensen has been unable to find a team-mate so far.

Salah scored the only goal before the break, with Liverpool deserving their narrow advantage. The Reds winger had a shot from distance to test Raya before scoring the opener at the end of a lovely move. Salah started it, playing the ball back to Fabinho on the edge of the box, with the midfielder curling it into Van Dijk. The centre-back could have gone for the goal himself but headed it across to Salah for a simple finish. Alexander-Arnold then found Nunez with a delightful pass into the box, but the striker missed the target with his effort. Brentford were under pressure for most of the first 45 minutes but did find the back of the net before the offside flag went up. Toney unleashed Mbeumo down the left, with the forward driving inside before curling his shot past Alisson.
