Liverpool train ahead of hosting Atletico Madrid in UCL

Liverpool are through to the Champions League last-16 two games early, after securing a fourth group-stage victory on Wednesday night courtesy of a 2-0 win over Atletico Madrid.

Diogo Jota and Sadio Mane netted first-half goals for Jurgen Klopp’s side, while Diego Simeone’s men saw their attempts to get back into the game all but disappear after Felipe was shown a straight red card for a challenge on Mane. Both Jota and Luis Suarez saw goals ruled out for marginal offside calls at either end in the second half, while the Reds spurned several other opportunities to move even further clear on the scoreboard.

Ultimately it mattered little, with top spot now guaranteed for Liverpool even with two group matches still left to play, while Klopp was also boosted by the return of Fabinho and Thiago Alcantara after injury - but lost Roberto Firmino in the second half. Atletico, meanwhile, sit third in the group, a point behind Porto who they play in the final gameweek.

Man City 4-1 Club Brugge

Gabriel Jesus adds a late goal for Man City in their home clash with Brugge! The striker makes it 4-1.

88 mins: Trent Alexander-Arnold’s cross is headed down by Divock Origi and it falls for Jordan Henderson on the edge of the box. He’s urged to shoot by the Liverpool supporters and does, catching the shot well but sending it straight into the arms of the goalkeeper.

85 mins: Thiago flicks a ball into the box for Origi who manages to bring it down and have a shot blocked. The effort sends the Liverpool fans chanting his name though. They’re enjoying themselves.

Another cross in from the right almost drops for Jota who attempts an overheaded kick but clatters into Trippier instead. The ball bounces loose to Minamino who blasts it into the back of the net but the whistle has already gone and Jota is booked for a high foot.

Just the six yellow cards and one red tonight.

Liverpool 2 - 0 Atletico Madrid

82 mins: Tsimikas swings the ball into the box from the left and Oblak jumps in front of Origi to pluck the ball out of the air. It’s been a simple kick around for Liverpool for the last 15 minutes or so. They’re cruising to victory here.

Liverpool 2 - 0 Atletico Madrid

79 mins: Minamino does come on for Liverpool, as does Divock Origi who replaces Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. Salah drives the ball into the right side of the box but Hermoso nips across him and marshalls the ball behind for a goal kick.

76 mins: This doesn’t look good for Roberto Firmino. He pulls up out of a run and walks straight over to the side of the pitch. A shake of the head towards Jurgen Klopp and Firmino heads down the tunnel. Takumi Minamino is told to get stripped but for now Liverpool are down to 10-men.

Man City 3-1 Club Brugge

Gundogan picks out Raheem Sterling at the back post, and the England forward converts to make it Man City 3-1 Brugge!

A terrific pass from Foden to get the ball to Gundogan initially.

Liverpool 2 - 0 Atletico Madrid

73 mins: Rodrigo De Paul’s putting in a decent acting performance to try and get Jordan Henderson a yellow card. Henderson barely touched him though instead kicking the ball off the Atletico midfielder and getting punished for it.

Atletico knock the set piece up the pitch and win a corner but Kieran Trippier’s delivery is easily dealt with by Liverpool.

Liverpool 2 - 0 Atletico Madrid

70 mins: Jurgen Klopp looks a little worried as Oxlade-Chamberlain takes a knock and stays down. He shakes it off though and after a word with his manager jogs back onto the pitch to continue.

Atletico have shut up shop. They don’t want to concede any more goals, they’re just letting Liverpool pass the ball around.
