From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. The January transfer window is open but there has been a shortage of big-money moves so far, aside from Manchester United’s Amad Diallo in a £37m move from Atalanta.

With the coronavirus causing havoc with teams’ squads and the fixture schedule, there could be a temptation to secure strength in depth for what could be a frantic close to the season. Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham have dropped more points and now look to be embroiled in a battle for a top four finish, rather than a title race, and with their defence their weakness to date, Real Madrid defender Eder Militao – who is also wanted by AC Milan, inter and Roma – could be of interest. While Stuttgart’s Argentine forward Nicolas Gonzalez is another target, with Premier League side Leeds and La Liga outfit Valencia joining the pursuit of the former Argentinos Juniors star. Interestingly, Valencia are also thought to be keen on taking Tottenham midfielder Harry Winks on loan.

Elsewhere in north London, Arsenal have been priced out of a deal for Norwich’s Emi Buendia and so could move for Brighton midfielder Yves Bissouma, though a summer switch appears more likely in this case, with the Seagulls close to securing Moises Caicedo from Independiente del Valle but expected to loan the 19-year-old to either Manchester United or Chelsea. Those powerhouses are also in a race to sign RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano, but Bayern Munich have joined that race.

ARSENAL MONITORING BRENTFORD STRIKER

Arsenal are tracking the progress of Brentford striker Ivan Toney, who has impressed in the Championship this season.

The Express claim the Gunners are impressed by the 24-year-old but are not currently in the market for a striker.

They will "keep a watchful eye" over Toney, though, and could see him as a long-term replacement for Alexandre Lacazette.

The Brentford forward has 16 goals in 22 Championship appearances this season after joining the club from Peterborough.

CONTRACT DISPUTE HOLDING UP OZIL TRANSFER

Mesut Ozil's move to Fenerbahce is being delayed by a contract dispute between the player and Arsenal, according to Fotospor.

The Germany international reportedly wants the €10m remaining on his contract to be paid before leaving for Turkey.

Arsenal, though, expect Ozil to pay back the €10m he earned for the first half of this season, during which time he did not make a single appearance.

A compromise will have to be reached if the transfer is to be completed in the coming days.

SCHOLES NAMES IDEAL UNITED TARGET

Paul Scholes has urged Manchester United to sign Leicester defender Wesley Fofana amid concerns over the defensive capabilities of Ole Gunnar Solksjaer’s side.

“As a back-four, I worry about how good they really are,” the former United midfielder told ESPN. "At full-back, Aaron Wan-Bisssaka is just about defending, which is fine for a game at Liverpool, but I'm not sure what Luke Shaw brings to the team.

"In the middle, Ole still has to find Harry Maguire's best partner. Eric Bailly has pace, but he is rash and picks up too many injuries. Victor Lindelof plays the position better and seems to be Ole's preferred option, but again, he is not totally convincing.

"If I was Ole and could sign a defender this month, I'd go for Wesley Fofana at Leicester. He's only 20, but he has been outstanding and he has the potential to be anything he wants to be. United have done OK at the back this season, but they have been exposed when playing against the big teams, and that's another problem they need to solve."

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has remained coy over his future at Milan, with the 39-year-old’s contract set to expire at the end of the season.
