From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. The January transfer window is open but there has been a shortage of big-money moves so far, aside from Manchester United’s Amad Diallo in a £37m move from Atalanta.

With the coronavirus causing havoc with teams’ squads and the fixture schedule, there could be a temptation to secure strength in depth for what could be a frantic close to the season. Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham have dropped more points and now look to be embroiled in a battle for a top four finish, rather than a title race, and with their defence their weakness to date, Real Madrid defender Eder Militao – who is also wanted by AC Milan, inter and Roma – could be of interest. While Stuttgart’s Argentine forward Nicolas Gonzalez is another target, with Premier League side Leeds and La Liga outfit Valencia joining the pursuit of the former Argentinos Juniors star. Interestingly, Valencia are also thought to be keen on taking Tottenham midfielder Harry Winks on loan.

Elsewhere in north London, Arsenal have been priced out of a deal for Norwich’s Emi Buendia and so could move for Brighton midfielder Yves Bissouma, though a summer switch appears more likely in this case, with the Seagulls close to securing Moises Caicedo from Independiente del Valle but expected to loan the 19-year-old to either Manchester United or Chelsea. Those powerhouses are also in a race to sign RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano, but Bayern Munich have joined that race.

WEST BROM INTERESTED IN GALATASARAY STRIKER

West Brom want to sign Galatasaray striker Mbaye Diagne, according to Sky Sports.

The 29-year-old, who has scored 11 goals in 18 appearances so far this season, could reportedly be available on loan this month.

West Brom are said to have turned their attention to Diagne after failing to sign Hoffenheim forward Ishak Belfodil.

AGUERO TOO EXPENSIVE FOR BARCELONA

Barcelona cannot afford to sign Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero, according to the Athletic.

The Spanish giants were linked with a move for the Argentine, who is out of contract at the end of the season.

But Barcelona are reportedly not in a financial position to even consider such a deal. The Blaugrana instead will aim to acquire €100 million in transfer fees and cut another €200m in player wages.

SOLSKJAER SAYS DIALLO NEEDS ‘TIME’ TO FULFILL POTENTIAL

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has labelled new signing Amad Diallo "an exciting talent" but reiterated the need for patience.

The 18-year-old completed his move to Old Trafford from Atalanta last week.

“Amad Diallo is now with the first team," Solskjaer told Dagbladet. "He’s an exciting talent and we’ll give him time. He’s in one of the best clubs to reach his best potential. Amad can be called up with the squad soon, I think he’ll make his debut this season.”

THREE CLUBS LEADING RACE TO SIGN BALOGUN

There are now only three clubs considered "serious contenders" to sign Arsenal striker Folarin Balogun.

The Guardian report that the 19-year-old will make a decision on his future "in the next fortnight".

Arsenal retain hope that the youngster will sign a new deal at the Emirates, although recent reports suggest he may have had his head turned.

CARDIFF IN ‘ADVANCED TALKS’ TO SIGN VILLA FULL-BACK

Cardiff are closing in on the signing of Aston Villa defender Frederic Guilbert, according to Football Insider.

And Guilbert is now reportedly on the verge of a loan move to Championship side Cardiff.

GUARDIOLA ON GARCIA FUTURE

Pep Guardiola has admitted the future of Manchester City defender Eric Garcia is unclear amid speculation of a January move to Barcelona.

Goal reported yesterday that the 20-year-old had agreed personal terms with the Blaugrana, although a transfer is still dependent on a number of factors, including negotiations between the two clubs over a fee.

Asked about Garcia's possible exit, Guardiola said: "I hope not but maybe Barcelona know better than me. I don't know what's going to happen but maybe it is going to happen."

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho has revealed there have been no discussions over extending Gareth Bale's loan spell.

The Wales international is on a season-long loan from Real Madrid, with the option of a second, but has endured an underwhelming time on his return to north London.

ROONEY ON BECOMING DERBY MANAGER

"When I first arrived back in the United Kingdom I was completely blown away by the potential of Derby County Football Club.

"The Stadium, Training Ground, the quality of the playing staff and the young players coming through and of course the fan base that has remained loyal and supportive.

“Despite other offers I knew instinctively Derby County was the place for me.

"To be given the opportunity to follow the likes of Brian Clough, Jim Smith, Frank Lampard and Phillip Cocu is such an honour and I can promise everyone in involved in the club and all our fans, my staff and I will leave no stone unturned in achieving the potential I have witnessed over the last 12 months of this historic football club.”
