From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal and Tottenham are all in the spotlight on this transfer deadline day and you can follow the latest right here throughout the day.

The January window closes at 11pm GMT and before then Liverpool are hoping to sign a centre-back, with Preston defender Ben Davies arriving permanently with Schalke’s Ozan Kabak joining him until the summer. Manchester United are looking to complete final exits with defender Marcos Rojo set to join Boca Juniors in his native Argentina, and Phil Jones and Sergio Romero set to depart in the summer if not today. Arsenal are also facing a decision on a defender’s departure as bids come in for Ainsley Maitland-Niles. Southampton, West Brom, Newcastle and Leicester are all thought to be jostling in the queue for the England international.

Elsewhere Leicester want Watford midfielder Nathaniel Chalobah, Paris Saint-Germain’s Idrissa Gueye has rejected a loan move to Newcastle United, and Christian Eriksen’s future remains up in the air with Tottenham interested in securing his services on loan until the end of the season, after last night’s disappointing defeat at Brighton. Newcastle defender DeAndre Yedlin is heading for Galatasaray but Chelsea midfielder Billy Gilmour is staying put after a U-turn from new boss Thomas Tuchel. And in France, Paris Saint-Germain are interested in taking Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos to join Mauricio Pochettino’s team.

MATIP OUT FOR REST OF SEASON

Joel Matip has been ruled out for the remainder of the season with an ankle injury following Liverpool’s late push to sign centre-backs Ben Davies and Ozan Kabak.

The 29-year-old sustained the damage in a challenge with Son Heung-min in the 3-1 victory over Tottenham last Thursday.

The severity of Matip’s injury, plus long-term injuries to Virgil Van Dijk and Joe Gomez, has meant Klopp’s side have moved late in the January transfer window to sign Davies permanently and Kabak on loan.

“Unfortunately, we found out now after everybody looked at it that Joel will be out for the rest of the season," Klopp told Liverpool’s official website.

“But he will be ready for the start of the next pre-season and finally everything will be sorted.”

LIVERPOOL SIGN KABAK

Liverpool have completed the six-month loan signing Ozan Kabak from Schalke.

The 20-year-old, who will wear the No 19 shirt, joins the Premier League champions for an initial £1m fee with the option of an £18million permanent move included.

Liverpool will potentially pay an extra £500,000 on the temporary agreement depending on appearances and Champions League qualification.

RICHARDS ON DAVIES SIGNING

Micah Richards insists Ben Davies will be “pinching himself" after his move to Liverpool but warns the former Preston star to remove the emotional side to succeed at Anfield.

“He is going there and is going to play and he has to show everyone what he can do at this level,” Richards told the BBC.

"He is decent on the ball and can see a pass. It's a great opportunity and good to see a young British talent get a chance. Who knows, if he does well at Liverpool there's not too many left-sided defenders for England.

“I hope he does really well and I'm absolutely delighted for him as these stories do not happen much.”

DAVIES REACTS TO ‘SURPRISE’ LIVERPOOL MOVE

Ben Davies is eager to play immediately to show what he can do after admitting some fans may never have seen him play after completing a “surprise” £2m transfer from Preston to Liverpool.

A fee was agreed on Sunday, and the Reds wrapped up a move ahead of tonight’s deadline to boost Jurgen Klopp’s options amid an injury crisis.

Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip are all out injured, forcing the likes of Fabinho, Jordan Henderson, Nathaniel Phillips and Rhys Williams to fill in at centre-back in recent weeks.

“I want to come in and play games to start with, I want to get my foot in the door and make myself a Premier League player rather than obviously a Championship player. And then take it from there really,” Davies told Liverpool’s official website.

DAVIES DELIGHTED

“I’m obviously delighted to be here," he says. “It’s a huge opportunity.

"Obviously it came as a bit of a surprise when it first came but once you start to get your head around it, the opportunity that is in front of me is incredible. I’d be silly to not make the most of it and learn off the players [at the club].

“I’ve never actually been to Anfield and I haven’t had a look around yet. I had a quick look out and had a look at the pitch and it looks like carpet, which obviously you’d expect.

“I haven’t actually walked out of the tunnel yet, so I’m looking forward to that. Just to be in this kind of atmosphere is brilliant.”

ABERDEEN SIGN HORNBY

Aberdeen have completed the loan signing of Scotland Under-21 striker Fraser Hornby, from French Ligue 1 side Stade de Reims until the end of the season.

Manager Derek McInnes told the club's website: "I'm very pleased to get Fraser in, a player we've monitored for a while.

"His club had other options for him, but Fraser made it clear he was keen to come to Aberdeen which pleases us no end and hopefully he can help us finish the season strongly.

"He'll give us the goal threat and forward play we know he is capable of and at the same time we can give him some much-needed game time.

"The fact he knows some of the players here from the Scotland Under 21 set-up certainly helps matters and I am sure he will fit in seamlessly. We're all really looking forward to working with him."

HERTHA SIGN KHEDIRA

A done deal from over in Germany where World Cup winner Sami Khedira is back in the Bundesliga.

Khedira is said have had offers from England, but he instead joins big-spending Hertha Berlin despite their struggles at the bottom of the league. Only goal difference is keeping Hertha out of the relegation zone after 19 rounds.

"I know his leadership qualities and so am very happy that we now have him under contract at Hertha," said the club's new sporting director, Arne Friedrich, who played with Khedira for Germany at the 2010 World Cup.

RUGANI SET FOR SERIE A RETURN

Daniele Rugani is set to cut short his loan with Rennes from Juventus.

The Italian defender will instead return to Serie A.

While Bologna were thought to be favourites, Cagliari is now seen as his likeliest destination as the former Chelsea target bids to build momentum for his career.
