Manchester United and Arsenal were both in the headlines this afternoon as they considered moves for Paris Saint-Germain’s soon-to-be departed striker Edinson Cavani. The Uruguayan is out of contract at the end of the season and available on a free transfer, and reports in his homeland suggest that offers have already been made from the two Premier League clubs along with Atletico Madrid. Chelsea meanwhile are on the hunt for a defender, with eyes on Issa Diop of West Ham and their former centre-back Nathan Ake at Bournemouth, with £40m bis prepared for both depending on who the club decide to focus on.
Tottenham Hotspur meanwhile are looking at Barcelona centre-back Samuel Umtiti despite long-term interest from Arsenal and United, with the France international facing a somewhat uncertain future as Barca are keen to move him on this season, while another star defender who appears to be on the market is Juventus’s Matthijs de Ligt, who despite only arriving in Italy at the start of the season is already being linked with a loan move back to Ajax after failing to settle in Turin. United and Chelsea have both been linked with Dinamo and Spain star Dani Olmo. There could also be some big moves across Europe. Real Madrid have been linked with a £68m move for Timo Werner, as well as Flamengo wonder kid Reinier, while Arsenal have turned their eyes to RB Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano as a long-term target.
DONE DEAL!
AC Milan have signed Simon Kjaer from Sevilla on loan until the end of the season, with an option to buy the defender in the summer.
Jose Mourinho wants two strikers this January to cover for the injury to Harry Kane. AC Milan's Krzysztof Piatek has been offered as one of the main options so far, amid a number of potential deals in what is likely to be a busy window.
Mourinho had already been looking for a back-up to Kane, for a role that has been something of an issue for Tottenham Hotspur, but the extent of the England captain's injury has caused a rethink.
The Portuguese is understood to have insisted on the necessity of bringing in two if Spurs are to have any chance of returning to the Champions League next season.
Here's the latest from Miguel Delaney:
Bruno Fernandes has apparently told Sporting that he wants to join Manchester United this month.
United have been offered the Portuguese international this month as they search to add more creativity to their squad.
And the Daily Telegraph report that the 25-year-old is trying to push a transfer from his end.
Sporting value the attacking midfielder at in the region of £68m.
So, who is AC Milan's new loan signing Simon Kjaer?
The 30-year-old centre-back has always carried a big reputation, earning 97 caps for Denmark, but he has not quite settled at one club, never spending more than two seasons in the same place, although he has produced impressive spells particularly in his early days at Wolfsburg and for a season at Lille.
He spent the first half of this season on loan at Atalanta but barely featured, and will now go to the San Siro primarily as back-up for Alessio Romagnoli and Mateo Musacchio.
Marash Kumbulla is a highly rated 19-year-old defender who plays for Verona and is an Albanian international, and there are reports in Italy that the centre-half is at the centre of a battle for his signature.
Tanguy Kouassi is another teenage defender with a big reputation. The 17-year-old will be out of contract in the summer leaving him free to leave Paris Saint-Germain, having made four appearances for the club this season.
PSG have reportedly offered the youngster a new deal but RB Leipzig are thought to be offering a €4m signing-on fee which has turned his head, while Manchester City are also said to be monitoring his situation.
Polish striker Patryk Klimala has arrived at Parkhead to complete his move to Celtic.
The 21-year-old is reportedly set to sign a four-and-a-half-year deal to join Neil Lennon's side for a fee of £3.5million.
Asked by STV before going into Celtic Park on Monday morning as to how he felt, Klimala said: "Good thanks. Yes, it is exciting".
The former Poland youth international has scored seven goals in 17 appearances for Polish Ekstraklasa side Jagiellonia Bialystok.
Islam Slimani and Christian Benteke remain the most likely strikers for Aston Villa to sign over the January transfer window, according to The Athletic.
Chelsea forwards Olivier Giroud and Michy Batshuayi are unlikely to come to fruition while Jay Rodriguez of Burnley is also thought to be uninterested. Glenn Murray of Brighton is also being considered, but it is Leicester's Slimani, currently on loan at Monaco, and Benteke, who is out of favour at Crystal Palace and a former favourite at Villa Park, who are at the top of the list right now.
And while we're discussing Benteke, here's Miguel Delaney with exclusive insight on Tottenham's transfer plans, which perhaps more confusingly have also considered the big Belgian...
