From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Review all of Friday's transfer news, rumours, done deals and collapsed moves from around the world.

Manchester United and Arsenal were both in the headlines as they consider moves for Paris Saint-Germain's soon-to-be departed striker Edinson Cavani. The Uruguayan is out of contract at the end of the season and available on a free transfer, and reports in his homeland suggest that offers have already been made from the two Premier League clubs along with Atletico Madrid. Chelsea meanwhile are on the hunt for a defender, with eyes on Issa Diop of West Ham and their former centre-back Nathan Ake at Bournemouth, with £40m bids prepared for both depending on who the club decide to focus on.

Tottenham Hotspur meanwhile are looking at Barcelona centre-back Samuel Umtiti despite long-term interest from Arsenal and United, with the France international facing a somewhat uncertain future as Barca are keen to move him on this season, while another star defender who appears to be on the market is Juventus's Matthijs de Ligt, who despite only arriving in Italy at the start of the season is already being linked with a loan move back to Ajax after failing to settle in Turin. United and Chelsea have both been linked with Dinamo and Spain star Dani Olmo. There could also be some big moves across Europe. Real Madrid have been linked with a £68m move for Timo Werner, as well as Flamengo wonder kid Reinier, while Arsenal have turned their eyes to RB Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano as a long-term target.

Eddie Howe doesn’t think there will be much movement at Bournemouth this month.

When asked whether or not there had been any bids for his players, he replied: “No bids for any of our players.”

And when asked if any of his players wished to leave, he said: “I would certainly hope not – not with the position that we’re in. It’s not a time for that. It’s a time for everyone to unite together and to be totally focused on achieving our goals and our aims. It’s a really difficult window to recruit but also to sell any of your top players. The ones that are part of our plans are absolute no-nos as far as I’m concerned.”

Cenk Tosun is in the process of having a medical at Crystal Palace, according to Sky Sports.

It is being reported that the striker is poised to move to London from Everton on a six-month loan deal.

His arrival would meanwhile free up Connor Wickham to join a Championship side on loan.

Newcastle head coach Steve Bruce has again given his backing to struggling striker Joelinton as he attempts to drag himself out of the doldrums.

The 23-year-old Brazilian cut a demoralised figure at the end of Saturday's 1-1 FA Cup draw with League One Rochdale, during which he passed up a glorious opportunity to add to the lone goal he has scored in the 22 games he has played for the club since his £40million summer move from Hoffenheim.

His efforts at the Crown Oil Arena did not go down well with a section of the travelling support, but Bruce remains firmly in his corner ahead of Saturday's difficult Premier League trip to Wolves.

He said: "No matter how he looks, always we've got the statistics to prove otherwise.

"In training and on match days, his physical statistics are very, very good. He's going through that classic scenario of a striker who can't score a goal.

"All of that gets heaped upon them, and it's amazing what a goal does. His best performance was Tottenham away when he scored. That one he rolled against Rochdale, we need to roll into the net and hopefully, that will get him up and started again."

Not so much a done deal but an end of a deal.

Newcastle have recalled England U19 defender Kell Watts from his loan spell at Stevenage.

To Chelsea where Inter Milan are said to have agreed terms with Olivier Giroud over a move this month.

The French international is looking for a way out of Stamford Bridge after failing to force his way into Frank Lampard's plans.

Antonio Conte is ready to facilitate and Sky Sports report an agreement has been reached over personal terms.

The two clubs must now find common ground over a fee which is expected to be nominal with only six months remaining on the 33-year-old's current contract.

The future of Moussa Dembele remains firmly up in the air.

Chelsea are understood to be very interested in the former Celtic man as they look for a new striker this month but Lyon remain resolute the 23-year-old will not be sold this month.

Goal say that Tottenham have now joined the race with Harry Kane now ruled out until at least April with a hamstring injury.

Roy Hodgson has been speaking about Crystal Palace new boy Cenk Tosun.

"Cenk has been heavily scouted by the club. We're very pleased to have him with us and know the qualities he can bring to the squad.

"He is in contention to be in tomorrow's squad. I'm very grateful for Everton to allow this to be done in time. It's important as we still have eight players missing.”

Ralph Hasenhuttl was today quizzed on Southampton's activity in the January transfer window, especially regarding a widely rumoured exit for 23-year-old forward Che Adams.

The £15m signing is yet to score for the Saints since joining from Birmingham City last summer - but Hassenhuttl, when asked if Adams could leave St Mary's on loan, said: "No. Absolutely no because we need every player. Not only because of injury, but he can help us. Even though he hasn't scored he played a very good game against Chelsea.

"Hes a positive guy and I want him here. We're working with him every day, showing him videos and telling him what he has to do. This is something of an investment in the future. We were convinced when we took him and were still convinced about him."

Adams made his first league start since September in the 2-0 win at Chelsea, but is very much second choice behind Danny Ings - who was rested that day.

Ings, 27, is enjoying a remarkable season, scoring 15 goals in all competitions, and may trouble Leicester's back line in Saturday's 3pm kick off.
