From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. Manchester United are reportedly close to signing Fernando Llorente on a free transfer.

Llorente is without a club, having been released by Tottenham this summer, and the 34-year-old is therefore free to sign with United.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is desperate to sign a new striker to help fill the void left by Romelu Lukaku's departure, and Llorente certainly would offer something different to Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial.

Nacho Monreal is determined to leave Arsenal this week.

Mundo Deportivo have reported that the defender has personally informed Unai Emery that he wants to quit the Gunners, having agreed personal terms with Real Sociedad.

Monreal, 33, moved to Arsenal from Malaga in 2013 and has been a first-team regular ever since.

Celtic have signed right-back Moritz Bauer on a season-long loan deal from Stoke.

The 27-year-old Austria international joined the Potters in 2018 and made 21 Sky Bet Championship starts, the last of those coming on the last day of the 2018/19 campaign.

Hoops boss Neil Lennon has been looking for cover at right-back, having brought in Hatem Abd Elhamed but allowed Mikael Lustig and Christian Gamboa to leave.

Bauer told the club's website: "I'm really, really looking forward to it. I know about the stadium, the historical Celtic Park, and I hope that I can win trophies here and have a very successful season.

"It's a massive club with a big history and when you see the stadium from the outside and the players there who have already worn the jersey - they are big names.

"I love being here and having the target of being first as I like that pressure. There are players here who have already won titles, and it's a big opportunity for me to learn from them and grow as a player as I hope to be part of a successful team."

Italian side Sassuolo want to sign Chelsea misfit Kenedy, according to reports.

Italian journalist Gianluca di Marzio claims Sassulo believe the 23-year-old – who has spent the last two seasons on loan at Newcastle Untied – will make an able replacement for compatriot Rogerio, who has been ruled out with a long-term injury.

Neymar update:

A report in Marca says Real Madrid officials are in Paris to try and conclude a deal for the Brazilian star.

What a seismic move that would be. L'Equipe have claimed Real want to send Gareth Bale the other way in a complicated swap deal, but Marca says those rumours are untrue.

Nice began life under new owners Ineos with their first defeat of the season, a narrow 2-1 Ligue 1 loss at home to Marseille.

Summer signing Dario Benedetto opened his Marseille account as he picked out the bottom corner just after the half-hour mark.

Midfielder Wylan Cyprien equalised with a penalty for Nice after 66 minutes, conceded following a foul by Ignatius Ganago.

France international Dimitri Payet restored the visitors' lead seven minutes later with a spot-kick of his own to seal maximum points for Marseille for the first time this campaign as they moved up to 13th.

Earlier, Lille returned to winning ways as Victor Osimhen netted in each half in a comfortable 3-0 home victory over St Etienne.

Osimhen slotted Domagoj Bradaric's cross into the bottom corner to open the scoring eight minutes before the break and Jonathan Bamba doubled their lead with a second-half penalty - conceded by Mathieu Debuchy.

Ligue 1 top scorer Osimhen completed his brace with his fourth goal from the opening three matches this season with 15 minutes remaining as Lille moved up to fourth.

Rangers are pursuing Liverpool's talented winger Ryan Kent, who spent last year on loan at Ibrox.

The 22-year-old wants to push through a move to Rangers in order to get game time, according to the Evening Times, and he was left out of Liverpool's most recent U-23 game as a result.

A new contract is looming for Poland forward Robert Lewandowski, who will be carrying the hopes of a second straight league win for Bayern Munich when the champions host Mainz 05 on Saturday.

The Bavarians have sprung to action in recent weeks on the transfer market, signing Croatian World Cup finalist Ivan Perisic, Brazil playmaker Philippe Coutinho and France youth international Mickael Cuisance.

But it has been 31-year-sold Lewandowski - at Bayern since 2014 - who has scored all five of their league goals, a brace in their 2-2 season opener against Hertha Berlin and a hat-trick to beat Schalke 04 last week.

With his contract running out in 2021, the striker hinted a new deal was close to being finalised.

"There is a lot in favour of an extension," he told Sport Bild magazine this week.

"From my side it is only about finalising some details. I feel good in Munich, the club has the same goals as me. To win titles, including the Champions League."

Lucas Moura has expressed his delight at David Luiz's move to Arsenal - and not just because of the points he could cost the Gunners this season.

The pair grew close at Paris Saint-Germain before going their separate ways, with Luiz rejoining Chelsea in 2015 and Lucas heading to Tottenham two years later. But the Brazilians retained their bond and Lucas has revealed how Luiz's move to north London will help their friendship grow even closer - despite the obvious north London rivalry.

“David is a very experienced player and knows how to go through this situation. He will be stronger very soon," Lucas told the Evening Standard. "I am happy for him because it was a good transfer for him to make. I am also happy because he is closer to me now. He can come visit me at my home easier because when he was at Chelsea, he was so far away!”
