Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Maverick forward Mario Balotelli said he was not afraid of failing at Serie A side Brescia and that he was still hoping for an Italy recall.

Promoted Brescia became the eighth club of the 29-year-old's turbulent career when he signed from them on Sunday on a free transfer from Olympique de Marseille.

Dozens of Brescia fans celebrated outside the hotel where "Supermario" gave a 12-minute news conference on Monday.

"I came to Brescia because this is my city, I can't compare this team to any other. But the goal is also to return to the national team," he said, adding that his aim was to play at Euro 2020.

"When Brescia's offer arrived, I didn't think of anything else. There's is no fear of failing, I hope to help this team grow as much as possible."

German newspaper Bild claim that Lille are interested in signing Bayern Munich midfielder Renato Sanches.

Sanches, who was previously loaned to Swansea City, has admitted that he is desperate to leave the Bundesliga champions.

"The situation is not good for me," said Sanches after coming on as a late substitute against Hertha.

"I again asked the club to leave and join a different club. But they did not let me leave. Five minutes, like today, is not enough for me," he said.

Sanches, who joined in 2016, has failed to hold down a starting spot amid tough competition and has repeatedly vented his anger at being given little playing time.

Jurgen Klopp has once again hinted he may retire from football when his Liverpool contract expires in 2022.

While accepting a German newspaper award yesterday, Klopp said: “I hope to continue like this, but in two, three years I don’t know what may happen.

“Maybe I’ll retire!

“It doesn’t necessarily mean it will happen, however, but if that were the case, you wouldn’t be surprised.”

Davide Zappacosta has admitted it is emotional returning to Italy after completing a loan move to Roma.

The full-back has struggled to make inroads into the starting eleven at Stamford Bridge and is relieved to have returned home.

“Returning to my country is very emotional," he told Sky in Italy. "I missed Italy a lot and I’m happy to return here with Roma – I feel at home here because I live close by.

"I know the sporting director [Gianluca Petrachi], I know how much passion he puts into his work and I know how passionate the fan base is. The team is very young and I think we can do well.”
