Brighton drew with Southampton at St Mary’s on Thursday, missing out on a chance to secure their place in next season’s Premier League.

Neal Maupay opened the scoring on 17 minutes as the visitors looked set to guarantee their survival, but Danny Ings struck his 20th league goal of the season shortly after the hour mark to ensure the points were shared.

What are the odds?

Southampton – 13/10

Draw – 5/2

Brighton – 5/2

Prediction

Both teams will want to get on the ball and control possession, which could lead to an open match with counter-attacks aplenty and chances at both ends. Saints are more clinical, so they win.

15 mins: Half chance for Samatta. El Mohamady gets forward for Aston Villa and puts a well directed ball into the middle of the box. Keane and Samatta both go for the aerial ball with the Everton central defender doing just enough to ensure Samatta doesn't connect cleanly and the Villa striker's header goes wide.

18 mins: Mason Holgate's picked up a knock and Carlo Ancelotti doesn't want to risk him any further. Jarrad Branthwaite replaces him for Everton.

Branthwaite's into the action immediately as he challenges Mings to an aerial ball.

21 mins: Things are getting a little testy out there. Richarlison is brought down and in reply Iwobi leans into a tackle on Grealish.

24 mins: The first drinks break comes and goes. It's been an okay start to the match, Everton have probably looked the better side but Aston Villa have shown they can threaten Everton on the counter attack.

27 mins: Grealish goes on a decent run into the Everton box but is met with too many blue shirts. Davies and Branthwaite try to take the ball off him but it's Keane who finally succeeds.

30 mins: Douglas Luiz gets away with some clumsy defending. Richarlison breaks free as Villa come forward on the counter. He brings the ball to the right side of the box and Luiz gets stuck in, bringing them both to the ground. Richarlison recovers and gives the ball to Iwobi out wide. Douglas Luiz chases it down and almost fouls Iwobi when trying to tackle him.

33 mins: Everton work the ball across the pitch. Andre Gomes shrugs off Trezeguet and passes the ball to Digne. He cuts back back inside from the edge of the box and Iwobi collects the ball. He puts it onto his left foot and shoots from outside the area but hits it over the goal.

36 mins: Corner to Aston Villa. Gomes loses the ball in midfield and Hourihane plays it up to Grealish. He runs at the Everton back line and shoots but the shot is deflected behind.

Hourihane plays a short corner to Grealish and Bernard almost intercepts it. Villa switch to play over to McGinn on the left. He swings in a cross but it's cleared away.

39 mins: Aston Villa give away a free kick in a good area, just outside the box on Everton's left side. Gomes puts it into the box and Douglas Luiz heads it behind for a corner.

Gomes also takes the second set piece but doesn't beat the first man with his cross.

42 mins: Digne sends a cross to the far side of the box. Iwobi brings it down and fires a quick ball across the six-yard box. Calvert-Lewin is there but Mings is positioned just in front of the Everton striker. The ball hits Mings and lands near his feet where he can clear the ball.
