At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

After such a fantastic first half of the season, Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side now find themselves trapped in a desperate slump, losing all of their last six league games in succession, including a harrowing 9-0 defeat by Manchester United. The Saints briefly topped the table at one stage but have now dropped down to 13th, with their hopes of securing European football now all but extinguished.
However, Chelsea’s fortunes have improved markedly since the arrival of Thomas Tuchel, even if a title charge is already beyond the Blues. The club have won five out of six games in all competitions since Frank Lampard was sacked and currently sit fourth, just four points adrift of second-placed Manchester United. There was relief for Timo Werner, too, in a 2-0 victory against Newcastle last time out, with the forward finally bringing his torrid goal drought to an end. Thiago Silva and Kai Havertz have both returned to full training ahead of the fixture, but Tuchel will already have one eye on Tuesday’s Champions League tie against Atletico Madrid and may choose to rotate his starting line-up. A promising Chelsea break comes to an end as Kante takes a heavy touch and then fouls Djenepo, who takes another kick to the shin.
SOUTHAMPTON 1-0 CHELSEA (39’)
Close! A free kick is whipped into the Southampton box and Zouma meets it with a powerful header. McCarthy, diving to his left, is able to claw it away.
SOUTHAMPTON 1-0 CHELSEA (38’)
There’s a quick VAR check for a potential red card as Werner catches Djenepo with a studs-up lunge. It’s not deemed worthy of a sending off.
SOUTHAMPTON 1-0 CHELSEA (37’)
Southampton have defended well here and won’t have been too concerned by Chelsea’s dominance in possession. McCarthy has been largely untroubled and players like Minamino, as he’s proved today, are capable of punishing any defensive lapses on the break.
GOAL! SOUTHAMPTON 1-0 CHELSEA (MINAMINO 33’)
Southampton lead against the run of play! Redmond cuts in from the right and plays a perfectly-weighted pass into the feet of Minamino. The Liverpool loanee takes it in his stride, races into the box and sells both Azpilicueta and Mendy short with a clever dummy, before coolly prodding home.
SOUTHAMPTON 0-0 CHELSEA (33’)
Excellent work from Kante to dispossess Minamino with the cleanest of tackles and then send a long ball over the top towards Werner. It’s just too long for the German.
SOUTHAMPTON 0-0 CHELSEA (32’)
Werner is sent clear down the left and pulls back towards Abraham in the middle. Vestergaard stretches out a long leg and beats the striker to the ball.
SOUTHAMPTON 0-0 CHELSEA (29’)
Rudiger has a shot from about 30 yards out which trickles into the arms of McCarthy. Creativity is lacking a little at the moment.
SOUTHAMPTON 0-0 CHELSEA (26’)
Mason Mount fires a pass towards Werner but it’s far too heavy. Tuchel doesn’t look happy. Chelsea are in complete control but haven’t created a huge number of chances yet.
