Chris Wilder’s beleaguered side finally secured their first victory this season against Bristol Rovers in the FA Cup last weekend and the Blades will be desperate to kickstart what would by now be a miraculous escape from relegation. United have taken just two points from their opening 17 matches, an astonishingly low total, particularly after their high-flying exploits last season. To pick up points, their priority must be to drastically improve their output up front, with just eight goals scored in the league all season.
Newcastle, meanwhile, are attempting to escape a negative spiral of their own, having gone seven games without a victory in all competitions. Frustrations continue to grow over Steve Bruce’s cautious tactics, but the manager has promised his side will offer more in the way of attacking adventure tonight. Despite being chalked off as another loss, the Magpies were bitterly unlucky against Arsenal in the FA Cup last time out. Andy Carroll spurned two magnificent chances in normal time before the Gunners went on to snatch victory in extra-time. Follow all the action live below:
SHEFFIELD UNITED 0-0 NEWCASTLE (42’)
Good save! Bogle drives into the box from the right and fires off a shot, which Darlow parries clear. Then Fraser goes into the book for a foul on Fleck. This is a good spell of pressure from the hosts.
SHEFFIELD UNITED 0-0 NEWCASTLE (41’)
So close! McGoldrick escapes on the left and plays a wicked low ball across the face of box. It flashes agonisingly past everyone waiting in the middle.
SHEFFIELD UNITED 0-0 NEWCASTLE (40’)
Fraser floats a corner into the box and Hayden meets it, glancing it wide of the target. It appears to strike Egan’s arm, but there’s a VAR check and no penalty is given.
At the other end, Fernandez makes an excellent last-ditch tackle to deny the marauding Burke.
SHEFFIELD UNITED 0-0 NEWCASTLE (38’)
Newcastle squander a real chance on the counter attack. Space opens up for Hayden, who carries the ball forward and finds Yedlin to his right. He returns the favour, picking out Hayden in the box, but the midfielder is stopped in his tracks by a superb tackle from Osborn.
SHEFFIELD UNITED 0-0 NEWCASTLE (36’)
Burke is set away again down the left and drifts inside. He moves the ball onto his right foot and hits a low shot, which is blocked on its way towards the bottom left corner.
SHEFFIELD UNITED 0-0 NEWCASTLE (35’)
Sheffield United are dominating possession and playing some slick football, but there’s a familiar lack of potency in the final third.
SHEFFIELD UNITED 0-0 NEWCASTLE (32’)
Bogle drives into the box from the right and picks out McGoldrick, who can’t quite connect with his attempted shot. Fleck then has an effort charged down, and shortly after Clark makes an important block to deny Burke.
SHEFFIELD UNITED 0-0 NEWCASTLE (30’)
Chance! Now Sheffield United go close. Ampadu whips a cross towards the back post and McGoldrick climbs highest. He gets under the ball with his header, though, sending it looping over the bar.
SHEFFIELD UNITED 0-0 NEWCASTLE (28’)
Chance! Out of nothing, Newcastle almost open the scoring. Fernandez fires a cross into the box and it’s perfect for Wilson, who has a free header a few yards out. But he can only power it wide, before putting his head in his hands in disbelief.
