Schalke twice hit the woodwork through Salif Sane and Suat Serdar in a dominant first half with Dortmund content to play second fiddle.
Schalke who won four games on the trot before stumbling in their last two, should have scored in the second half but for teenager Rabbi Matondo's less than clinical finish.
Dortmund left their attacking game for the second half with Jadon Sancho coming close, but they were badly missing injured top striker Paco Alcacer, out with a muscle problem.
Third-placed Dortmund, who have now won only one of their last five league games, are on 16 points, with Schalke in seventh spot on 15. Relive all the action:

Second half: Dortmund get the second half underway in the Revierderby. Schalke win the ball in the Dortmund box, it comes out to Caliguri who boots it over the bar.

48 mins: Schalke win a corner and the ball ins delivered into Burgstaller who wins the header. He directs the ball to the far post but Guerreiro is there to clear it away.

51 mins: Matondo again has good chance on goal. Burgstaller opens up Dortmund with a flicked on header and Matondo is away. He gets into the box and doesn't beat the goalkeeper. The offside flag is raised so it wouldn't have counted anyway.

54 mins: Sancho comes close after picking up the ball from Gotze. It was a good move to get the ball up the pitch from Dortmund, then Gotze layed it off for Sancho who attempts a curling shot, aiming for the bottom corner but he sends it wide of the post.

Hazard comes on for Gotze as Dortmund make a change.

The referee lets the game run and Dortmund break before Kenny stops the attack with a good tackle.

63 mins: During the corner Delaney has accidentally hit in the face and his nose burst. He gets some treatment and the referee has a check on the handball, he doesn't give a penalty and Dortmund have a throw in in Schalke's half.
The home side boot it up to Matondo who runs with the ball before losing it to Hummels.
