Manchester City produced a stunning late comeback at the Bernabeu to claim a 2-1 win over Real Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League tie.

Gabriel Jesus and Kevin De Bruyne, the latter from the penalty spot, both struck in the final 12 minutes to give Pep Guardiola's side a brilliant victory after falling behind to an Isco strike.

To make matters worse for Real, captain Sergio Ramos was sent off in the closing stages for denying Jesus another goalscoring opportunity.

City had gone into the last-16 encounter under a cloud after recently being banned from the competition for the next two years.

That issue will continue to overshadow their immediate future but their fine display under pressure in Madrid at least breathed new life into their current campaign.

It's a massive result for Man City. They can afford to lose 1-0 in the second leg and still progress now but based on that performance from Real Madrid it's unlikely to happen.

Post-match reation from Gabriel Jesus who scored Man City's equaliser after spending the first half on the left wing. He told BT Sport:

"I can remember my time in the Palmeiras academy and I play like a winger and then become a striker. But I go to the pitch to help my team-mates. It doesn't matter if I have to run back or forwards. I have to help my team-mates.

"We are learning a lot. We have to play different positions sometimes."

Man City's match winner, Kevin De Bruyne is happy with the result but says his team won't lose focus for the games to come:

"It's a very good start. We struggled in the first 15 minutes but you have to go through the storm.

"It was an even first half. We started the second half really well. Their goal came at a bad moment for us - we were dominating. Our response was brilliant. It was a beautiful goal from Gabriel Jesus.

"In four years with Pep, he sometimes surprises. Sometimes players aren't told until the game what we need to do. There were some good and some lesser moments. In a quality game like this, you'll struggle sometimes.

"We're only halfway there. We have an important game at home in three weeks. Now we have to recover for Sunday's [Carabao Cup] final."

Pep Guardiola told BT Sport:

"We tried to come here to win the game and we did. This is just the first part. If one team can overcome this situation, it's this club.

"When we were better, we conceded a goal. When they were bettter, we scored a goal. That's football. I remember the quarter-final a few seasons ago at Anfield when we played incredibly well and they scored all their shots on target."

He added: "After five months injured [for Laporte] in this scenario it's so demanding. Fernandinho came in and did incredibly well. I'm so proud. This is the first step. It's not over. We can enjoy the moment. On Sunday we have a final. We'll keep going in the Premier League and prepare for the second game against Real Madrid."
