From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Gabriel Jesus was denied a last-gasp winner by VAR as Tottenham Hotspur snatched a remarkable 2-2 draw against champions Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

The Brazilian looked to have claimed a deserved victory for City right at the death of an intriguing Premier League clash but his late strike was ruled out for a handball by Aymeric Laporte. The scenes as the goal was chalked off were reminiscent of the dramatic ending to last season's Champions League tie between the two sides at the same venue last season.

The ruling made the encounter extra frustrating for City, who had completely dominated proceedings and racked up 30 shots to the visitors' three.

Adrian has had a relatively quiet second half, but he needed to be alert as Matip nearly guides a cross into his own net. The Spaniard flies to his left and pushes the ball away.

GOAL! Southampton 1-2 Liverpool (Ings)

83 minutes

A calamitous error from Adrian! It nearly happened in the first half, and he clearly hasn't learned his lesson. The goalkeeper receives a back pass and takes too long on the ball, allowing Ings to close him down. Adrian's attempted clearance is blocked by the striker and flies into the net. Southampton are back in the game.

Ings misses a sitter! It really should be 2-2 late on here! Southampton work the ball nicely to the edge of the box, where Valery drills a low ball across goal. It's straight into the path of Ings, who only has to guide it on target from a few yards out. But he doesn't connect properly and drags his effort wide.

There'll be four minutes of added time. It's backs to the wall now for Liverpool.

Southampton 1-2 Liverpool

90+2 minutes

Liverpool just about deal with a long throw into the box and now have the ball in Southampton's half. A couple of minutes left for the visitors to hold on.

Full time: That's it! Liverpool hold on for a hard fought victory and make it two wins from two in the Premier League.

That was a much better second half performance - Adrian's mistake aside - from Klopp's team. And they'll be relieved to have come away with a win so soon after the Super Cup in midweek.

There are promising signs for Southampton, too. Ralph Hasenhüttl's side are left with no points from their first two games, but they performed well for long periods this afternoon.
