From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

Liverpool are still in the hunt for new signings and the latest rumour is that they are prepared to take the fight to Manchester City to secure the signature of Napoli centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly.Sadio Mane is their secret weapon, with the Senegalese well-placed to persuade his national teammate to turn down a move to the Etihad in favour of Anfield before the window shuts in 10 days.
The club have already signed Thiago Alcantara and Diogo Jota last week, while long-term they have their eyes on a dream deal for Kylian Mbappe next summer. Watford’s Ismaila Sarr is a more realistic addition before next month’s deadline, while Barcelona’s Ousmane Dembele, too, could be an option, though surely only a loan agreement could be reached for the French winger given the time frame and the Catalans still hoping to recoup most of the £124m they spent three years agoThe Reds must also decide on the futures of Georginio Wijnaldum and Rhian Brewster, who is reportedly of interest to Crystal Palace and Sheffield United. Here are the latest transfer rumours surrounding Anfield.

WIJNALDUM ‘REJECTS’ NEW CONTRACT OFFER

Gini Wijnaldum has turned down the offer of a new contract at Liverpool, according to Football Insider.

The midfielder has been at the centre of transfer speculation following the arrival of Thiago from Bayern Munich.

Widjnaldum, whose current contract expires at the end of the season, has reportedly rejected “at least one” offer in the last few months.

Liverpool want the Dutchman to commit his immediate future to the club, but his demands of a deal lasting until 2024 or 2025 have proved too much, given he turns 30 this year.

But Wijnaldum is set to stay at Liverpool this season, and could play out the final year of his contract.

FEE AGREE FOR WATFORD’S SARR

Liverpool have agreed a fee of between €35 and €40m for Watford forward Ismaila Sarr, according to a report from France Football.

It remains to be seen if the Premier League champions will look to complete the deal having only just secured the signing of Diogo Jota.

Sarr would reportedly command a contract worth around €7m a year.

CONTACT MADE OVER MBAPPE

Could Kylian Mbappe be a Liverpool player in 2021?

L’Equipe report that the Reds are in regular contact with the French international over a possible move next summer.

Mbappe looks set to leave Paris Saint-Germain after next summer’s European Championships with Jurgen Klopp’s side seemingly positioning themselves as one of the possible suitors.

Real Madrid are also long-term admirers and also said to be monitoring the situation closely.

One to get excited about…

OX STAYS

Liverpool have no plans for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to be sold, according to the Daily Express.

Oxlade-Chamberlain continues to struggle for fitness and could now find his game-time even more severely limited with the arrival of Thiago, but Wolves are said to be interested, but Jurgen Klopp wants to keep the attacking midfielder at the club.

PALACE IN CHARGE

As reported earlier, Crystal Palace appear to be in the lead to sign Rhian Brewster.

The Daily Mail reports that Palace are his favourite destination, even though Sheffield United, West Brom and Aston Villa are all interested.

Brewster’s priority is regular playing time in the Premier League and Palace are undoubtedly light in that area of the squad.

SUAREZ TO ATLETICO?

FIRE SALE!

As many as eight players could be on their way out of Liverpool before the window closes, according to the Daily Express this morning.

Rhian Brewster could be on his way to Crystal Palace while Divock Origi is also deemed surplus to requirements. But there is also reportedly room for a number of fringe players to leave including Marko Grujic, Harry Wilson, Loris Karius, Nat Phillips, Yasser Larouci and Taiwo Awoniyi.

Writing in the Daily Mail this morning, Danny Murphy says Gini Wijnaldum is heading for the exit.

Thiago arrives as an almost like-for-like upgrade on Wijnaldum, and even though Barcelona’s interest has reportedly cooled, the former Liverpool midfielder Murphy thinks the writing is on the wall for the Dutchman.

“I do think Gini Wijnaldum’s departure has an air of inevitability about it now because Liverpool will have seven or eight players challenging for three positions, which means too many unhappy faces for the balance of the squad.”
