From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. England missed out on a third-placed finish at the Women's World Cup as they were beaten 2-1 by Sweden in their play-off in Nice.

Sweden raced into a 2-0 lead at the Allianz Riviera, with Kosovare Asllani firing in in the 11th minute after an Alex Greenwood error and Sofia Jakobsson adding a fine strike in the 22nd. Phil Neville's Lionesses replied through Fran Kirby's left-footed effort just after the half-hour mark and two minutes later the ball was in the Swedes' net again courtesy of an Ellen White finish.

But, just had been the case in the 2-1 semi-final loss to the United States four days earlier, White had what she had thought was an equaliser disallowed following a VAR review.

Excellent defending from Bronze to get her head to a dangerous Jakobsson cross. Sweden are beginning to threaten more regularly now having been on the back foot for most of the half.

The frustration is growing for England as an equaliser continues to prove elusive. Taylor nips in and wins the ball in Sweden's half, but the looping ball into the box is harmless and Bronze is penalised for a push in the box.

Resolute defending from Sweden. Carney crosses from the left in the direction of White and Taylor, but both are surrounded by sliding Sweden defenders and neither can get a shot off.

A speculative effort from about 30 yards out by Moore trickles wide. England make their final substitution: Daly replaces McManus.

England, for all their effort, cannot find a way through a wall of yellow shirts. An attempted through ball from Moore rolls out for a goal kick. Just a few minutes remain.

England are throwing players forward, and that means there's space to break into for Sweden. Jakobsson has a chance to finish the game, but doesn't generate enough power on her shot to beat Preston.

So close! A corner is swung into the middle, where Lindahl connects with a punch. But the ball drops straight to the feet of Bronze, who fires a volley towards goal. Lindahl is beaten, but Fischer does brilliantly to head clear on the line.

Four minutes of added time will be played. Zigiotti sets off on a driving run and finds herself one on one with Telford. She can't beat the goalkeeper, who saves with her feet. There's still time for England.
