From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. England opened their 2019 Women's World Cup campaign with a hard-fought win over Scotland in Nice.

Expectations are high for Phil Neville's Lionesses after a successful run up to the finals including victory in the SheBelieves Cup back in March but they didn't have it all their own way against the Scots.

Nikita Parris opened the scoring from the spot before Ellen White doubled the lead just before the break. Claire Emslie grabbed one back to make it a nervy finish but Phil Neville's team got over the line to take the three points.

England 0-0 Scotland, 10 minutes

A rangy ramble from Jill Scott into the Scotland box, and another corner for England.

England 0-0 Scotland, 11 minutes

Beth Mead's corner is flicked on but finds only green grass.

Hold on - we've a VAR check.

To the screen the referee goes. Not quite sure what this is for...

England 0-0 Scotland, 12 minutes

Ah. Fran Kirby has fired right against Nicola Docherty's hand in an attempt to cross. This looks a penalty. The arm is away from the body, and under the new regulations, that's as clear as they come.

ENGLAND PENALTY!

GOAL! England 1-0 Scotland (Nikita Parris, 13 minutes)

And Nikita Parris will score!

Rifled into the top corner. Excellent spot kick.

Unfortunate for the Scots, but England lead.

England 1-0 Scotland, 16 minutes

A shame for the game, too, which was bubbling away nicely before the penalty.

England starting to dominate possession, and looking comfortably stroking the ball around.

England 1-0 Scotland, 18 minutes

Caroline Weir stays down after sliding in on Ellen White, but it is she who has committed the foul, a slightly raised boot not finding a spherical home, only ankle.

Free kick. No major harm done to either player.

England 1-0 Scotland, 19 minutes

Lucy Bronze and Nikita Parris are combining beautifully on the right. Bronze's Cruyff turn/hip swivel sends Lisa Evans flying towards the byline and tees up Parris for a cross, which is just about headed clear of Beth Mead at the far post by a scrambling Rachel Corsie.

Fran Kirby fires just wide from 20 yards.

Parris, in France. England goal number 13 for Nikita Parris, a perfect penalty to put England ahead.
