Burnley head to Selhurt Park to face Crystal Palace on Saturday afternoon, with both teams hoping to get back to winning ways.

The Clarets have failed to win any of the last three after picking up successive wins prior to that, leaving them in 17th place in the Premier League table - though their situation is not as dire as it might be in that position in previous seasons, given the eight-point gap down to Fulham inside the bottom three.

Palace also won back-to-back games recently, but suffered a 2-0 reversal in their last league outing against Leeds to leave them in 13th place in the table.

Roy Hodgson’s men have looked decent at times, attack-minded and fast-flowing with some of their football compared to previous seasons, though consistency has been a real issue and their defensive record hasn’t been exemplary.

Burnley’s real issue is at the other end of the pitch, with a paltry haul of just 14 goals for the campaign being the lowest in the entire league.

Defiant Emi Martinez secures Aston Villa a point at Brighton

Brighton 0-0 Aston Villa: Goalkeeper produced a string of crucial saves to deny the Seagulls

DEAN SMITH TOLD SKY SPORTS

Not even bang average, I have never seen us make so many unforced errors in a game, it was sloppy from start to finish but had the resilience to keep the ball out of the net. Brighton were the better team.

“It was disappointing all round and the only thing that comes from it is a clean sheet and the resilience.

“Emiliano Martinez made some good saves when needed and was our best player on the pitch tonight. It shows you need a player like that at times, we have not had many performances like this where we have been second best.

“We were equally as bad here last season and losing 1-0 at half-time. Another point to the tally but we are disappointed with our performance.

“Graham Potter has coached them very well and if you keep giving a team like that the ball they will hurt you.

“It looks like a hamstring injury (for Matty Cash) as he was turning and this cold weather that can happen.”

He’s got 12 clean sheets for the season now as well. Second only to Manchester City’s Ederson.

REACTION FROM TYRONE MINGS

Disappointed with the performance. We lacked instensity all night.

“Happy when not at it, we didn’t lose. Keeper has made some great saves and the defenders made some great blocks.

“Brighton will be more disappointed than us. Matyinez is brilliant. The confidence he instills in us is brilliant. Very good to play in front of him.

“It was always about continuing to improve on last season. We are getting there, we are not the finished product. We still have a long way to go.”

MARTINEZ SPEAKS TO SKY SPORTS

Not really (pleased with a point), we came here to win and be in the top seven with two games in hand. We were sloppy in the first half and could not create the chances in the second.

“That is my job and the back four, to keep a clean sheet. It is one of those games where we had to put our bodies on the line but we were really off today.

“It was so cold, I thought I had a good game because I made a save early on and I am delighted to keep everyone out today.

“I just want to repay the trust of the manager, goalkeeper coach and club. I am glad I settled in really quickly but credit to my team-mates who are doing a really good job.

“We are looking to Europe, that is why I am frustrated today. We were not in the game since the first minute and Brighton deserved to win.”

A point apiece means that Brighton move back up to 15th in the table, Aston Villa meanwhile jump back in front of Tottenham as they’re up to 8th.

BRIGHTON 0 - 0 ASTON VILLA

90+3 mins: Full time. Goalless. The points are shared. Villa will be happy and Brighton underwhelmed. Martinez made nine saves to deny Brighton all three points.

BRIGHTON 0 - 0 ASTON VILLA

90+2 mins: Trossard is the Brighton man that takes the free kick. He goes for goal and hits the wall. The rebound come back to him and his second attempt squeezes through to Martinez were a little fumble gets Brighton excited before he stops the ball crossing the line.

Michael Jones13 February 2021 21:49

BRIGHTON 0 - 0 ASTON VILLA

90 mins: There’s going to be three added minutes to play and Brighton have a free kick in a very dangerous area as Trezeguet brings down Lallana just outside the box.

Michael Jones13 February 2021 21:48

BRIGHTON 0 - 0 ASTON VILLA

87 mins: How are Brighton not in front? They’ve had 24 attempts on goal compared to Villa’s four. Emi Martinez is the reason. He’s a guaranteed man of the match. Sanson is tackled in the middle of the park by Bissouma and Villa win a free kick.
