Arsenal's club-record signing Nicolas Pepe stepped off the bench to score two free-kicks and seal a Europa League comeback win over Vitoria and spare the blushes of under-fire head coach Unai Emery.

After losing at Sheffield United on Monday night, Emery launched an impassioned defence of his tenure as Gunners boss on the eve of the Group F clash - but what followed was as below-par performance rescued by the brilliance of his £72million man, who struck a fine brace to earn a 3-2 win.

Without a goal from their first two games and with no away win in Europe since 2005, Vitoria stunned the Emirates Stadium as former Tottenham winger Marcus Edwards opened the scoring before Bruno Duarte restored the lead following Gabriel Martinelli's equaliser.

With more than one "Emery Out" banner displayed and the crowd singing for Mesut Ozil - again absent from the matchday squad - it was clear Emery's calls for patience from supporters had largely fallen on deaf ears but the stadium erupted as Pepe curled in two wonderful free-kicks in the final 10 minutes.

2-1 is our prediction

13 min: Arsenal 0-1 Vitoria

One of the Vitoria supporters has rather amusingly come dressed as the Pope to the Emirates. But based on this performance so far from the Portuguese side, their prayers are being answered.

15 min: Arsenal 0-1 Vitoria

A completely different back four to Monday night, but this defence looks similarly all at sea.

Rob Holding has been found wanting so far tonight and he just manages to clear the ball here.

17 min: Arsenal 0-1 Vitoria

That's better from the Gunners!

They move the ball at pace and Smith Rowe's turn creates an opening, but Vitoria get a man back to block the shot.

From Camden. Scoring in Islington.

20 min: Arsenal 0-1 Vitoria

Vitoria are getting a lot of joy down Kieran Tierney's side and are getting in a number of crosses.

It has been a difficult opening 20 minutes for the Scot, and Marcus Edwards has benefited from that.

23 min: Arsenal 0-1 Vitoria

Unai Emery has received criticism for not starting Hector Bellerin and Kieran Tierney on Monday, but on tonight's evidence it is apparent why.

On this occasion it is Arsenal's captain who is outfoxed and the Gunners just manage to clear.

26 min: Arsenal 0-1 Vitoria

Some deft chants of the Mesut Ozil song can be heard around the Emirates with Arsenal delivering another uninspiring performance so far.

It is the most the home fans have said so far tonight.

This isn't far off.

29 min: Arsenal 0-1 Vitoria

Emile Smith-Rowe has been Arsenal's brightest player tonight, while Martinelli nearly manages to get something on Bellerin's cross.

Still not quite happening for Emery's side.

GOAL! Arsenal 1-1 Vitoria (Martinelli 32')

This is the first time Kieran Tierney has gone on one of his forays forward and it brings immediate success.

The Scot's cross in has pace and the young Brazilian Martinelli heads in without too many problems.

All square again.
