Spain ended European champions Italy’s world record 37-match unbeaten run as Ferran Torres scored twice in a 2-1 win at the San Siro stadium in their Nations League semi-final.

Spain will face the winners of Thursday’s other semi-final between France and Belgium in Sunday’s decider.

Torres put Spain ahead in the 17th minute, steering a left-wing cross from Mikel Oyarzabal into the far corner past Italy keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Roberto Mancini’s side, who beat Spain on penalties in the Euro 2020 semi-final in July, found themselves down to 10 men in the 42nd minute when Leonardo Bonucci was sent off for a second yellow card after elbowing Sergio Busquets.

Torres then sent Luis Enrique’s side in with a two-goal lead at the break when he was left unattended to head in another fine cross from Oyarzabal.

Italy ensured a tense end to a quality match when they pulled a goal back, seven minutes from the end, as Enrico Chiesa took advantage of hesitant Spanish defending, broke from the halfway line to the box and then slipped the ball to substitute Lorenzo Pellegrini to convert. Relive all the action below:

Italy 0 - 2 Spain

54 mins: Busquets feeds a pass through the lines and finds Koke making a run up the middle. He dinks the ball out to Pino on the right side and the teenager weaves his way into the box. He sends across a short pass but Chiesa gets there first and whacks it away.

Italy 0 - 2 Spain

51 mins: Spain have very little to worry about. Their extra man means Italy can’t be too aggressive in their press or else they’ll leave themselves open in defence. The home side are sitting back and looking to counter. Spain are content to pass the ball around.

Italy 0 - 2 Spain

48 mins: Jorginho has been in the wars since the restart. He’s doing his best to win the ball in midfield but gets hit with two heavy tackles. The first from Ferran Torres and the second from Gavi.

Torres comes off worse from his challenge and signals over to the bench where Yeremy Pino gets stripped to come on. The substitution occurs in the next break of play and Spain’s goalscorer is replaced with the 18-year-old.

Italy 0 - 2 Spain

Both Italy and Spain have won 11 of their 38 meetings to date, drawing 16 times: only against Switzerland (23) have Italy drawn more games than against La Roja.

The Azzurri will need a miraculous comeback if they want to earn a win now tonight, even when it was 11 vs 11 Spain were the better team.

Italy 0 - 2 Spain

What an intense half of football. Italy started bright as Spain looked to find their feet. That only took 17 minutes as the visitors broke through the Italian defence on the left wing with Mikel Oyarzabal getting in behind Giovanni Di Lorenzo to supply Ferran Torres in the box. He beat Alessandro Bastoni in the air to guide the ball home.

The game turned into a physical contest with strong, solid tackles flying in from both teams. Leonardo Bonucci argued with the referee and picked up a yellow card before a mistimed aerial challenge on Sergio Busquets saw him given a second one.

He was sent off in the closing minutes of the half but there was still time for Oyarzabal and Torres to combine again and double Spain’s lead. Italy have it all to do in the second half. It’s a mountain for them to climb.

Half-time: Italy 0 - 2 Spain

45+3 mins: Spain are in total control of this semi-final. They have two goals and a man advantage. Ferran Torres’ second on the stroke of half-time could end up being a killer blow.

GOAL! Italy 0 - 2 Spain (Ferran Torres, 45+2)⚽️

45+2 mins: it’s a brilliant move from Spain who make use of the gap in Italy’s defence to add to their tally on the stroke of half-time. Alonso brings the ball down the left and knocks a pass into the box to Sarabia. He plays a one-touch pass to Oyazabal who crosses it in from the left side of the box and finds Torres inside the six-yard box. Torres beats Bastoni in the air and heads the ball back across goal to beat Donnarumma on his right and give Spain a second goal. Lovely.

Italy 0 - 1 Spain

45 mins: Cesar Azpilicueta and Emerson are having a good tussle out there. Emerson with his forward driving runs and Azpilicueta trying to stop him. This time the Chelsea captain is caught on the back foot and has to shoulder charge the left-back down. Another yellow card pulled out.

One minute of added time to go in the first half.

Italy 0 - 1 Spain

43 mins: Marcos Alonso swings the resultant free kick into the box from the left side of the pitch. Italy defend it well and Chiesa is clipped by Gavi as he attempts to clear the ball. The Italians all want Gavi booked but the referee isn’t persuaded.
