From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Scotland will be looking to bounce back against San Marino after their humiliating 3-0 defeat at the hands of Kazakhstan.

After that shock upset, San Marino will certainly fancy their chances against Alex McLeish's side - despite being the lowest-ranked country in world football and having conceded 37 goals in their last ten matches.

Scotland must now secure a win to keep their hopes of automatically qualifying for Euro 2020 alive.

Good afternoon and welcome to our live coverage of Wales vs Slovakia.

The first game of Wales' European Championship qualification campaign is perhaps the most important. Ryan Giggs' side will know that, after victories for Slovakia and Croatia last week, a win here is crucial.

Slovakia will be tough opposition, though. Pavel Hapal's team have shown signs of progress in recent months and come into the game on the back of a 2-0 win over Hungary.

Wales, meanwhile, were in friendly action last week, leaving it late to beat Trinidad and Tobago at Wrexham's Racecourse stadium. They will need to be on the front foot this afternoon in what feels already like a game they cannot afford to lose.

It's been a story of inconsistency for Ryan Giggs as Wales manager so far. The former Manchester United manager described his opening year in charge of the national team as a "free hit". Today, things get serious.

"No matter what the results were, it's important for us to get off to a good start," Giggs has said.

"First game at home it's not going to be easy. They are coming here with three points and something to either hold on for or go on and win and be in a strong position so we will need to be up for it."

Gareth Bale will, inevitably, be the focal point for Wales in attack this afternoon. But he is joined by several promising youngsters: David Brooks, Harry Wilson and Swansea speedster Daniel James all start.

There's no Aaron Ramsey, of course, but Bale is confident Wales can deal with the Arsenal midfielder's absence:

Wales tend to be fast starters, so that bodes well for today's game. Given the quality of their opposition, though, it's not likely to be straightforward.

Wales 0-0 Slovakia

Slovakia start on the front foot, keeping possession and winning a corner on the left. The set piece is taken short and eventually worked to Vavro, who fires a shot well over the bar.

GOAL! Wales 1-0 Slovakia (James)

5 minutes

What a start! Wales break down the right through Brooks and Wilson, but the former under-cooks his pass into Daniel James. The Swansea youngster immediately wins it back, though, and then drills a powerful shot low into the bottom corner. A goal on his competitive debut, and the perfect start for Wales.
