Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Northern Ireland welcome Austria to Belfast in what is effectively a dead-rubber in Group B3.

Northern Ireland will want to reclaim some pride nonetheless as Michael O’Neill’s side are yet to register a point, and are already guaranteed.

Austria drew 0-0 with runaway Group B3 Leaders Bosnia-Herzegovina on Thursday, but a squad that includes Bayern Munich’s David Alaba will want to finish off their Nations League campaign with a win. Follow it live:

Northern Ireland 0-0 Austria, 1 minute

Austria appear to have started in a 4-2-3-1 with David Alaba playing in a left wing role opposite Valentino Lazaro. Promising Salzburg midfielder Xaver Schlager starts between them.

A 4-3-3/4-5-1 hybrid for the hosts.

Harry Latham-Coyle18 November 2018 17:03

Northern Ireland 0-0 Austria, 3 minutes

The visitors' goalkeeper Heinz Lindner shows a calm head to clear as Northern Ireland press well in these early stages.

Harry Latham-Coyle18 November 2018 17:05

Northern Ireland 0-0 Austria, 5 minutes

Nice passing from Northern Ireland, but Niall McGinn is unable to retrieve an overhit clipped pass down the line in his direction.

The home team have seen more of the ball through the first five minutes.

Harry Latham-Coyle18 November 2018 17:07

Northern Ireland 0-0 Austria, 7 minutes

A first save from Heinz Lindner.

A bouncing ball breaks for Corry Evans and his effort ricochets twice off a pair of Austrian defenders, befuddling Lindner briefly.

The goalkeeper recovers well to tip over the bar acrobatically, and Austria clear the subsequent corner.

Harry Latham-Coyle18 November 2018 17:09

Northern Ireland 0-0 Austria, 10 minutes

The visitors have settled into this game now, and are stroking the ball around with confidence as the Northern Irish press just loosens a little.

Harry Latham-Coyle18 November 2018 17:12

Northern Ireland 0-0 Austria, 13 minutes

Austria move forward through David Alaba, and he wins a free-kick with a drag-back as George Saville is adjudged to have tripped him.

20 yards out on the left, and Alaba will line this one up...

Just over the bar. Trevor Carson had it covered, too.

Harry Latham-Coyle18 November 2018 17:15

Northern Ireland 0-0 Austria, 14 minutes

Michael Gregoitsch picks up the ball 40 yards out and turns towards goal.

Stefan Lainer is making a superb surge forward from right back but the tall striker opts instead for the shot.

It is rather tame, but Trevor Carson (making his competitive debut in goal for the hosts) can only parry behind an effort that was bouncing wide anyway.

Northern Ireland get their head to the corner and Austria's volley from the edge of the box is rather wild and wayward.

Harry Latham-Coyle18 November 2018 17:17

Northern Ireland 0-0 Austria, 18 minutes

Stuart Dallas breaks free from left back with an impressive burst of speed, and David Alaba fells him when he is left in the Leeds man's wake.

Free kick in a dangerous position...

Harry Latham-Coyle18 November 2018 17:20

Northern Ireland 0-0 Austria, 19 minutes

The ball in finds the head of Liam Boyce in space, who may be a little disappointed not to have found a more convincing effort.

It ricochets off of a number of players in and around the six yard box, before Jonny Evans is flagged for offside.
