Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Welcome to The Independent's live coverage of today's final Group E games as the Republic of Ireland take on Italy and Sweden face Belgium.

  • Kick-off: 8.00pm
  • Preview: Italy vs Republic of Ireland
  • Preview: Sweden vs Belgium
  • Ireland will go through with a win, most likely as a best third placed team.
  • However, they can still finish second if Sweden beat Belgium and Ireland’s winning margin is at least two goals better than the Swedes’.
  • Anything other than victory will spell the end of the tournament for Martin O’Neill’s men.
  • Italy are already through as group winners, regardless of the result.
  • Belgium only need a draw to guarantee second place. If they lose and the Republic of Ireland beat Italy, Belgium are out.
  • Sweden will go through with a win and would secure second, unless Ireland beat Italy by three goals or more.
  • Sweden are out if they lose. A Sweden draw combined with an Irish win would also see the Scandinavians go out.

Another awful free-kick from Ronaldo. He's been brilliant today but he has to stop taking those. An appalling ratio.

DRAMA! A late late goal for Iceland! They counter attack in the dying seconds and regain the lead against Austria. They'll play England in the next round.

Italy 0 Ireland 0: It's been all Ireland so far. Not much in the final third though.

Italy 0 Ireland 0: Early corner for Italy, taken short but a dangerous cross is then whipped in. Duffy gets in though to head it out for a corner.

Italy 0 Ireland 0: OOOF. Jeff Hendrick goes close, firing a long range effort from outside the box that just flies wide of the post.
