Allianz Arena erupts as Germany score first goal of Euro 2024

Switzerland edged out Hungary to secure the ideal start to Euro 2024 in Group A with a 3-1 victory. They join Germany at the top of the group after the hosts thrashed Scotland 5-1 in the tournament opener last night.

And goals from Kwadwo Duah and Michel Aebischer has the Swiss in control at the break. But after Dominik Szoboszlai set up Barnabas Varga to halve the deficit, Switzerland were left hanging on. But Breel Embolo, returning from an injury-hit season, settled the contest with a delightful, chipped finish.

Earlier, Duah opened the scoring in just his second game for Switzerland, shooting low past goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi off a pass from Aebischer. Aebischer made it 2-0 just before halftime, sidestepping away from Attila Fiola to find space on the edge of the box to hit a curling low shot past Gulacsi.

Varga's diving header in the 66th off Dominik Szoboszlai's cross brought celebrations for Hungary as some of its black T-shirt-wearing hardcore fans lit flares. Hungary kept Switzerland under pressure after that but couldn't find a second goal. Switzerland is second in Group A after host nation Germany beat Scotland 5-1 on Friday in the tournament opener. Hungary had its first loss in a competitive game since September 2022.

Albania have certainly been better this half, but they’re still lacking cohesion in attack. They lose possession again with an attempted ball over the top.

There’s a booking for Hoxha as he elbows Frattesi in the back.

Decent combination from Italy as Barella plays a clipped ball over to Frattesi, but his hooked effort lands on the top of the net.

Euro 2024: Italy 2-1 Albania

Albania win it back and enjoy another little period of possession, but they’re still lacking a clear threat. Pellegrini wins possession and Italy counter, but the attack ends as Jorginho’s through ball is intercepted.

Euro 2024: Italy 2-1 Albania

Euro 2024: Italy 2-1 Albania

56 mins

Some great play from Italy as Scamacca flicks it around the corner to Pellegrini, who sends a flick of his own through to Frattesi, but Strakosha saves well again.

It’s offside in the end anyway, but Strakosha didn’t know that.

Euro 2024: Italy 2-1 Albania

55 mins

Albania have enjoyed a brief spell of sustained possession, though they’re yet to fashion a clear-cut opportunity, and the long ball over the Italy defence runs to Donnarumma.

Euro 2024: Italy 2-1 Albania

50 mins

There’s a lot of space opening up for Italy’s midfielders now. Barella collects the ball and plays it to Scamacca, but the attack breaks down.

Albania counter, and Broja wins a foul near the edge of the Italy box after being dragged down by Calafiori, who is booked.

HT: Italy 2-1 Albania

Italy will be hoping for more of the same, while Albania will need to find a cutting edge (or some more scarcely believable luck) if they’re to find a way back into this.
