From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. It’s the final day of the Championship season and before the chaos of the play-offs takes hold next week, there is the small matter of deciding who goes up to the Premier League… and who drops down to League One.
Cardiff City know a win at home to Reading will see them return to the Premier League for the first time since 2014, but their opponents are not totally safe, sitting only two points above the drop zone in 19th.
Fulham will be waiting in the wings knowing they must win to capitalise on any slip-ups, although they are also playing a relegation-threatened side in Birmingham City.
At the other end of the table, there are five teams fighting to avoid the two final relegation places as Burton Albion and Barnsley are away to play-off chasing Preston North End and Derby County respectively. The final team involved are Bolton Wanderers, who are at home to Nottingham Forest.

Preston 2-1 Burton
Burton Albion are relegated, as mentioned earlier, for the first time since 1977. Nigel Clough had almost pulled off the remarkable when Akpam pulled the Brewers level on the hour mark. But a 90th minute winner from Louis Moult followed the chaos at Bolton, leaving Burton heading back to League One. So close, yet so far.
Preston meanwhile nearly shot themselves in the foot with Bodin's two yellows for handball and simulation. They managed to snatch a win, but Derby's win over Barnsley was never in doubt. Preston finish 7th, two points adrift of the Rams.
Neil Warnock has achieved his eighth promotion. He is now the outright record-holder for the most promotions in the Football League. But of all eight, he says this one, with Cardiff, tops the lot:
He told Sky Sports amid the pandemonium at the Cardiff City Stadium:
"It's the biggest achievement in my 38-year career by an absolute mile.
"I've got a great bunch of lads. It's such a fabulous achievement, because nobody gave us a chance. It's amazing. I've had some great promotions and great squads, but because of the circumstances when I came here - second from bottom - and we've built it all the way up.
"I've never known a week longer than this. I've not slept for longer than about three hours. At my age, you're not going to get many more chances. I owe [my wife] Sharon a lot.
"It's an amazing feeling for a manager to know that you brought that together."
