From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

The FA Cup continues today with four fixtures to get stuck into. Both Chelsea and Leicester booked their place in the quarter-finals of the competition last night but who will join them today? Follow all the live action below as it unfolds:

Huddersfield 0-1 Manchester United

Huddersfield 0-1 Manchester United

33' - Philip Billing copies midfield partner Danny Williams in having a shot from distance but, like Williams' effort, his shot is straight at Sergio Romero.

Huddersfield 0-1 Manchester United

36' - This is looking like a smash-and-grab job for United at the moment. They've been really, really poor in this first half but somehow lead through Romelu Lukaku's early strike.

Huddersfield 0-1 Manchester United

43' - Chris Smalling has had his critics in recent weeks but he's been superb here today. Victor Lindelof has been good beside him but Smalling has been the visitors' stand-out player in a pretty poor first half.

Huddersfield 0-1 Manchester United

45' - Ashley Young's through ball is collected by Juan Mata, who rounds Jonas Lossl before slotting the ball home!

However, VAR is currently checking for offside against Mata...

Disallowed!

After consulting VAR the referee disallows Juan Mata's goal for offside! However, we've still not seen any conclusive evidence to prove that he was in fact offside.

Half-time - Huddersfield 0-1 Manchester United

The referee brings an end to the opening period and United lead at the break through Romelu Lukaku's early goal.

Romelu Lukaku gave United the lead early on

Liam Corless17 February 2018 18:22

Right, let's recap exactly what happened at the end of that first half...

Juan Mata thought he had doubled United's lead but the on-field referee, Kevin Friend, opted to consult VAR to check whether the Spaniard was offside in the build-up to the goal.

The video assistant referee, Neil Swarbrick, then attempted to check whether Mata was on or offside but a technical hitch meant he couldn't accurately do that.

So, instead of doing the logical thing and allowing the goal to stand (after all, it wasn't an obvious officiating error to allow it in the first place), he made the call by himself and decided to disallow the goal.
