Antonio Conte and his Chelsea team will be targeting a second victory in five days when they host manager-less Everton in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday evening.

The Blues, following the disappointment of successive league losses to Crystal Palace and Manchester City, will hope to build some positive momentum after Saturday’s stirring 4-2 triumph over Watford at Stamford Bridge.

Fortunately for the hosts, there doesn’t seem to be a better time to welcome the Toffees to west London. Following the decision of the Everton board to sack Ronald Koeman after a 5-2 defeat at home to Arsenal on Sunday, the Merseyside club have reached a new nadir in what has already been a substandard season.

Caretaker David Unsworth will be desperate to reverse this disappointing trend, however, and may view a shock victory over a Chelsea team who have proven inconsistent so far this term as an ideal opportunity to impress his seniors.

Conte, with Chelsea visiting both Bournemouth and Rome in the next week, will certainly make some changes for the fixture, with Kenedy and Charly Musonda – who both impressed in a 5-1 victory over Nottingham Forest in the last round -both likely to start in midfield. The Italian, though, will remain confident of a positive result.

What time does it start?

Chelsea vs Everton kicks off at 19:45.

Where can I watch it?

Highlights will be shown at 22:30 on Channel 5.

It’s a big game for…

Gylfi Sigurdsson. The Icelander has so far failed to reach his elegant best in Everton blue. Tonight may prove a good chance to change that – in his preferred No.10 role he could create havoc amongst a weakened Chelsea backline.

Best stat…

10-0. Over their three most recent meetings, Chelsea have netted 10 times without the Toffees scoring.

Remember when…

Romelu Lukaku’s splendid solo effort in the last cup fixture between the two sides, in 2016. How Everton would love to be able to call upon the big Belgian for some similar inspiration this evening…

Player to watch…

Jordan Pickford. The young keeper’s brave shot-stopping has been a rare positive this season for Everton. He will have to be on fine form again here to repel Chelsea’s attacking contingents.

Past three meetings…

Chelsea 2 (Fabregas, Morata) Everton 0, August 2017

Everton 0 Chelsea 3 (Pedro, Cahill, Willian), April 2017

Chelsea 5 (Hazard x2, Alonso, Costa, Pedro) Everton 0, November 2016

Morata scored twice the last time these two met

Full-time - Chelsea 2-1 Everton

Well, the second half was a lot better than the first, wasn't it?

The referee blows his full-time whistle and Chelsea are into the last eight courtesy of goals from Antonio Rudiger and Willian.

Will they be joined in the draw by Spurs or West Ham? There's around 10 minutes to play at Wembley and the visitors are leading 3-2 having trailed 2-0 at half-time!

Spurs 2-3 West Ham

86' - Not long to go now at Wembley. Can West Ham hold on for an extremely significant victory? Spurs aren't showing too much urgency at the moment but you know they've always got a goal in them.

Full-time - Spurs 2-3 West Ham

West Ham win! They were losing 2-0 at half-time but the Hammers have turned it around to beat Spurs 3-2 on their own (temporary) patch!

Now, how much will that do for Slaven Bilic's job security?

Reaction from West Ham's players

Mark Noble: "2-0 down at Wembley against a fantastic Spurs team is a massive, massive mountain to climb. We haven't been doing ourselves justice recently. We are accountable for the performances. I said in the week that we need to wear the shirt with pride and we've done that tonight."

Andre Ayew: "We stayed confident, we were down. The coach had words and I want to congratulate the whole team for the work done today. We need to stay calm because we have a massive game on Saturday (away to Crystal Palace). We can enjoy our derby win but we need to prepare for Saturday, which is very, very important.

"We knew that if we scored early in the second half we would have a chance. Today we've shown that we have character and quality."

Post-match reaction from Slaven Bilic

On whether West Ham deserved to win: "To score three goals against Spurs and to be that great, that compact and that good on the ball, then of course we deserve it and we are delighted."

On how the players managed to turn it around: "Goals give you energy and also when the other team scores it takes you down. The aim at half-time was for us not to concede the third one but to score a goal and that's what we've done. After that we had more energy and more confidence on the ball.

"In the second half we were much closer in midfield. Hernandez and Lanzini were much closer to Alli and Sissoko. Those two in particular are always good. It was really a very, very good team performance."

On the need for West Ham to kick on: "We have energy, we have composure, we have players coming back from injury so this is the standard. Some games you will win, some you will lose but this is the standard of play we need.

"I'm glad when we win, especially in this way. You can see that the team is very, very, very alive and we are very stubborn in a positive way. Considering the whole season, we've done nothing here tonight. We need to continue like this."

Post-match reaction from Mauricio Pochettino

"It looks like the game is over at half-time but the second half was completely different. In 15 minutes we conceded three goals. That was the problem and that can't happen.

"When you are not on the same mental level it is difficult because you can concede one goal. The opponent has nothing to lose and they start to believe and then we conceded a second goal and we started to suffer..

"After Real Madrid and Liverpool it was difficult to keep up the motivation and keep up the energy."
