Manchester City retained the English League Cup by beating Chelsea 4-3 on penalties after a bizarre climax to the Wembley showpiece on Sunday which saw Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga refuse to be substituted.

Nothing could separate the sides as the match finished 0-0 after extra time but it was City who claimed the season's first major silverware as they won the shootout.

Raheem Sterling fired the decisive spot kick past Spaniard Arrizabalaga to complete the first part of what could be a quadruple for Pep Guardiola's side.

Arrizabalaga minutes earlier been involved in surely one of the strangest incidents in a Wembley final when he defied Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri's orders to come off in the closing minutes of extra time after appearing to be injured.

Sarri, who had told substitute keeper Willy Caballero to take over from Arrizabalaga, was left fuming in the technical area at the open show of mutiny by one of his players.

"It was a big misunderstanding because I understood the keeper had cramp and was unable to go to the penalties. But it was not cramp and he could go to the penalties," Sarri said.

To compound matters Arrizabalaga then dived over Sergio Aguero's weak penalty during the shootout.

He did save from Leroy Sane but when Chelsea's David Luiz struck the post with his spot kick, it was left to Sterling to smash his penalty high into the roof of the net and send the City fans into delirium after a tense afternoon.

Chelsea 0-0 Manchester City, 26 minutes

Willian's diagonal reaches Pedro but the Spaniard can do little with his header from a floated ball like that.

Emerson picks up the ball in the left-back berth and space opens for Eden Hazard to run between the two Manchester City centre-halves, but Emerson's ball is overhit.

Chelsea have so far frustrated Manchester City, sitting deep and packing the midfield.

Bernardo Silva touches off to Sergio Aguero, who shoots from 20 yards.

The shot is heavily deflected and Kepa Arrizabalaga is able to gather as the ball rolls towards his goal.

Kevin De Bruyne has now moved to the left of Manchester City's midfield, swapping with David Silva. The Belgian has looked the real danger for Chelsea so far.

Chelsea 0-0 Manchester City, 30 minutes

Fantastic footwork from Bernardo Silva, somehow finding an orifice to stick the ball into as Emerson slides in, pulling it out again with the left-back taken completely out of the game.

David Luiz is similarly befuddled by the little Portuguese winger, and clatters in to him in frustration, earning him the first caution of the afternoon.

Chelsea 0-0 Manchester City, 32 minutes

Chelsea keep possession for a little while, but the attacking options required to trouble the Manchester City defence simply aren't there, with willing runners for those in possession to look to found wanting.

Chelsea 0-0 Manchester City, 34 minutes

Eden Hazard and N'Golo Kante look to work a one-two down the right but Aymeric Laporte recovers, allowing Ederson to cooly show off his footballing might with the calmest of 20-yard strokes to Kevin De Bruyne with two in Chelsea blue circling.

At the other end, a De Bruyne cross reaches Raheem Sterling, who opts to head back across goal, Antonio Rudiger eventually punting the ball high into the London sky before Sergio Aguero can fashion a finish.

Chelsea 0-0 Manchester City, 37 minutes

Chelsea are doing well to disrupt Manchester City, the midfield, virtually operating as a five with Willian and Pedro playing so deep, working immensely hard to smother David Silva and Kevin De Bruyne in possession every time either playmaker sniffs the ball.

Both Kevin De Bruyne and Raheem Sterling move to the byline, but the former overhits and the latter underhits two poor attempts at crossing.

Sterling then regathers the ball, but is crowded out.

Chelsea 0-0 Manchester City, 40 minutes

Clever from Kevin De Bruyne, slowing to invite Willian to rush in and then accelerating to move past the Brazilian, who hauls him back and concedes the free kick.

A chance for Manchester City to deliver from wide on the right, just about level with the penalty spot.

Chelsea 0-0 Manchester City, 42 minutes

Kevin De Bruyne's ball comes all the way through to Raheem Sterling on the far touchline, and he similarly misdirects his cross, Nicolas Otamendi's acrobatic hook back into play not managing to force an opportunity.

David Silva then rattles against Antonio Rudiger's legs looking to find a teammate. Corner.
