Guardiola praises Foden then heads for a glass of wine as City win in FA Cup

Former Manchester City skipper Vincent Kompany will take Burnley back to his old club in the FA Cup quarter-finals.

The Clarets, the current Championship leaders, were paired with the reigning Premier League champions in the draw minutes after their 1-0 fifth-round win over Fleetwood on Wednesday evening.

Carabao Cup winners Manchester United will host top-flight counterparts Fulham, while League Two Grimsby Town’s reward for their shock 2-1 win at Premier League Southampton is a trip to Brighton and Hove Albion.

In the remaining tie, Sheffield United will host Championship rivals Blackburn Rovers.

Man Utd dig deep to keep cup treble dreams alive

Manchester United found a way to win. They often do. Behind for 23 minutes, facing up to the end of their dream of a cup treble, perhaps exhausted by their efforts against Barcelona and at Wembley, they instead salvaged victory. Alejandro Garnacho’s 90th-minute curler flew past Alphonse Areola and Fred’s 95th-minute strike completed a memorable comeback.

Ten Hagie Time does not quite have the same ring as Fergie Time but the watching Sir Alex Ferguson has seen quite a few late United goals this season. Now Erik ten Hag is reviving a slumbering giant and while Harry Maguire and Bruno Fernandes lifted the Carabao Cup on the Old Trafford pitch before kick-off, it may not be the last silverware they have to parade.

But for David Moyes, who never got a major honour in his ill-fated time as United manager, there was further cruelty at Old Trafford. He has famously never won a league game here as a visiting manager, yet it seemed Said Benrahma’s opener had given West Ham hope of ending a 43-year wait to win the FA Cup. However, there will be no 21st-century successor to Trevor Brooking, no Wembley hero just yet. Moyes ended up staring on grim-faced. His week could have brought the sack, instead it yielded a 250th Premier League win, in thrashing Nottingham Forest, but a decent display at Old Trafford produced only defeat.

FA Cup quarter-final draw

There’s a couple of tasty fixtures for the next round.

Vincent Kompany returns to the Etihad with the goal for knocking his old team out of the tournament as Burnley take on Man City.

League Two’s Grimsby Town have to face another Premier League side when they travel to Brighton.

It’s an all Championship affair between Sheffield United and Blackburn in an unusual occurance at this stage of the competition.

Finally Manchester United go in search of more trophies when they host Fulham.

Manchester United produce late fightback to beat West Ham in the FA Cup

Alejandro Garnacho inspired Manchester United to a late comeback win against West Ham as Erik ten Hag’s men sealed progress to the FA Cup quarter-finals three days on from their Carabao Cup triumph.

Sunday’s 2-0 victory against Newcastle secured the Old Trafford giants’ first silverware since 2017 but the manager’s immediate message to his players was “get back to work”.

United looked set to be brought back down to earth with a bump after Said Benrahma put David Moyes’ West Ham into a deserved lead at Old Trafford.

But Nayef Aguerd’s 77th-minute own goal sparked an impressive turnaround, with teenager Garnacho’s superb 90th-minute effort followed by a stoppage-time strike by Fred in a 3-1 triumph.

Southampton suffer embarrasing FA Cup giantkilling by Grimsby

Gavan Holohan converted two penalties as League Two side Grimsby Town dumped Premier League strugglers Southampton out of the FA Cup with a shock 2-1 win at St Mary’s.

Midfielder Holohan capitalised on moments of madness from Saints pair Lyanco and Duje Caleta-Car to fire the Mariners into the quarter-finals of the competition for the first time since the Second World War.

Croatia defender Caleta-Car atoned for his mistake by halving the deficit for the top-flight’s bottom club with 25 minutes to go.

But the 1976 FA Cup winners could not prevent another major setback of a miserable season as they crashed out at the hands of the lowest-ranked side remaining in the tournament.
