From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

Jose Mourinho let his pent-up anger out on some water bottle holders after dreadful Manchester United rode their luck to seal progress to the Champions League last-16 through Marouane Fellaini's late strike against Young Boys.

With Juventus beating Valencia in the other Group H match, United knew victory against the Swiss champions - a side they beat 3-0 in Switzerland - would have secured progress with a match to spare.

But Mourinho's underperforming side lacked creativity, cohesion and confidence against a Young Boys side displaying all those characteristics, only for Fellaini to secure a lucky 1-0 win and progress to the knockout phase in stoppage time.

The United manager's frustration had been growing throughout the match and his angry celebration said it all as he kicked one water bottle carrier and threw another into the floor.

Victory meant United head to Valencia next month with progress assured, but Tuesday's performance raises more questions than answers given their tepid response to Saturday's goalless draw with struggling Crystal Palace.

Prediction

Manchester United 2-0 Young Boys: Surely Jose Mourinho’s side have enough to beat their far inferior opposition, right?

Manchester United vs Young Boys, 14 minutes

A nice move from the hosts with a number of players combining down the left results in another opening for Marcus Rashford.

Rashford shoots from the left with his weaker foot and can't produce the requisite power to truly test David von Ballmoos in the Young Boys goal.

An open and lively start between Lyon and Manchester City.

Harry Latham-Coyle27 November 2018 20:17

Marcus Rashford missed a good early one-on-one opportunity, his chipped effort just landing the wrong side of the crossbar.

Lyon 0-0 Manchester City, 18 minutes

Clearly headers and volleys isn't part of the French training regime as Marcelo becomes the second Lyon player to completely butcher an attempted volley.

We finally see a replay of that Memphis Depay missed chance and it gets worse every time you watch it.

He's in front of Kyle Walker and not under a huge amount of pressure, while the ball is about shin high. Depay just completely misses his attempted side foot as it catches only his studs with goal agape. City fortunate to be level.

Manchester United 0-0 Young Boys, 22 minutes

A severely underhit lay-off from Jesse Lingard in the general direction of Nemanja Matic allows Young Boys to nip in and break.

The attack breaks down after a fairly obvious pull back from Luke Shaw disrupts the momentum of a supporting player. Shaw somehow escapes caution, though Matic does go into Felix Brych's book for his folio-through trying to retrieve Lingard's pass.

Lyon 0-0 Manchester City, 24 minutes

Memphis Depay stands over a free kick about 30 yards from goal. As the cliche goes, he can hit them...

A decent effort, but he didn't really worry Ederson who watched it beyond his right-hand post.

Still an open nature about this game. You suspect it won't finish goalless...

Manchester United 0-0 Young Boys, 26 minutes

A fantastic driven pass through the lines from Chris Smalling is turned on by an equally excellent touch from Jesse Lingard into Marcus Rashford's path.

Rashford fancies a shot at goal and hits it well, low towards the bottom corner to the right of David von Ballmoos. The Swiss goalkeeper has it covered but retracts his gloves as the ball bounces wide of his post.

Lyon 0-0 Manchester City, 29 minutes

Another huge chance for Lyon!

Superb driving play down the left from Ferland Mendy takes him beyond Kyle Walker, and his low cross finds Maxwel Cornet completely free at the far post.

The Ivorian striker opts to take a touch, which is heavy. Cornet just about latches on to it nonetheless, but his finish is wide under pressure from Aymeric Laporte. He could perhaps have taken it on first time, but even with a touch he should have had time to simply slot home.

A second huge opportunity squandered by Lyon inside the first half hour. Will they live to regret them?

Manchester United 0-0 Young Boys, 36 minutes

Better play from Young Boys and Miralem Sulejmani lines up a left-footed drive from about ten yards out on the left of the box.

Chris Smalling leaps and extends a leg as he lunges to his left, blocking the shot well, before recovering to be back in position as the Swiss side recover to help repel that movement, too.

Strong defending from the centre-half.

Manchester United 0-0 Young Boys, 38 minutes

A lovely dummy from Marcus Rashford, completely fooling Young Boys captain Steve Von Bergen before being crowded out with a lack of support around him as he charges forward.

Von Bergen is in a little bit of bother after his attempted challenge. He slid awkwardly on his knee and a change may be being prepared.

Von Bergen isn't keen to go off, however, and is trying to run it off. Grimacing, he trudges to the sideline for more treatment but soon rejoins affairs after Marouane Fellaini is flagged offside. Still in some discomfort, though.
