From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Gabriel Jesus grabbed a hat-trick as Manchester City, aided by a farcical penalty decision, edged closer towards the Champions League last 16 by thrashing Shakhtar Donetsk 6-0.

City were leading 1-0 through David Silva in the Group F encounter at the Etihad Stadium when Raheem Sterling stubbed his toe and fell over to earn a freak spot-kick which Jesus converted.

Shakhtar had a right to feel aggrieved but they were otherwise outplayed for a second time in two weeks by City, who made victory certain through Sterling, Riyad Mahrez and two more Jesus strikes.

It was a performance that suggested whatever negativity might surround City following a series of allegations about their financial affairs in recent days, none of it is affecting Pep Guardiola or his players.

The result also ensured they will go into Sunday’s derby against Manchester United in good heart, with the bonus of having rested the likes of Sergio Aguero, Leroy Sane, Benjamin Mendy and Vincent Kompany.

Juventus 0-0 Manchester United, 7 minutes

Some nice early passing from the visitors. Paul Pogba is playing in a more advanced role on the left of the midfield three, with Ander Herrera and Nemanja Matic slightly deeper.

Juventus 0-0 Manchester United, 9 minutes

Cristiano Ronaldo steps over the ball twice but does not fool the Manchester United defence, meaning his effort does not find the bottom corner, instead clattering off a pair of legs and away.

Rodrigo Bentancur's shot is more firmly struck but also blocked, ricocheting away for a corner.

Juventus 0-0 Manchester United, 10 minutes

The corner is again poor but Juventus soon put their opponents in peril again, with Ashley Young a little lost at right-back.

The cut-back fortunately evades both Cristiano Ronaldo and Paulo Dybala.

Juventus 0-0 Manchester United, 11 minutes

First booking of the night, and Nemanja Matic was always a likely recipient.

He slides crudely into Dybala and the Romanian referee pulls out the card.

GOAL! Manchester City 1-0 Shakhtar Donetsk, (David Silva, 12 minutes)

It hasn't taken the hosts long to break the deadlock at the Etihad.

Gabriel Jesus' cross is knocked home by David Silva to give Manchester City the lead.

Third consecutive Champions League game in which the diminutive Spaniard has found the net. Prolific.

Juventus 0-0 Manchester United, 16 minutes

In Turin the game has settled into more of a lull. Manchester United are still seeing more of the ball, but the Juventus defence has been relatively unthreatened.

Cristiano Ronaldo's speculative drive is wide of the right-hand post.

1-0.

Juventus 0-0 Manchester United, 18 minutes

Paulo Dybala and Miralem Pjanic stand over a dead ball on the right wing.

Pjanic will take it, but his delivery is uncharacteristically poor.

Harry Latham-Coyle7 November 2018 20:20

Juventus 0-0 Manchester United, 20 minutes

Alexis Sanchez has started the game in lively fashion but has not been able to force a clear chance through the first 20 minutes.

Harry Latham-Coyle7 November 2018 20:22

Juventus 0-0 Manchester United, 21 minutes

Sanchez will now look to swing in a free kick from the left, about level with the edge of the box.

Chris Smalling is climbing all over Alex Sandro at the far post. Free kick.
