Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Gerard Pique says Barcelona do not need to use Saturday's defeat to Real Madrid as a wake-up call ahead of their Champions League clash with Atletico Madrid - a match he expects to be even tougher than the Clasico.
Barca saw their record-breaking unbeaten run come to an end after going down 2-1 to 10-man Real at the Nou Camp, with Cristiano Ronaldo netting an 85th-minute winner.
It was a chastening defeat against their biggest rivals but, with a six-point lead in the Primera Division, a Copa del Rey final to look forward to and a crunch Champions League quarter-final against Atletico to play, defender Pique insists there is no need to blow the result out of proportion.
The Spain international, who headed Barca into a 56th-minute lead against Real, told a press conference on Monday: "We don't need a wake-up call because we already know how difficult and complicated it is to win every game.
"Emotionally it's a defeat like any other. We went 39 games without losing and at times it happens. Onwards.
"We're ready to play another game on Tuesday and to do very well. Tomorrow is a unique opportunity to have a great game and leave the bar very high."
And the teams wait in the Nou Camp tunnel to enter the pitch. A potential cracker awaits...
Despite playing at home, Barcelona will be wearing their change strip of yellow tonight
15 min: The crowd have been applauding the late Johan Cruyff in the 14th minute. Nice to see this becoming a regular fixture at the Nou Camp.
18 min: Slightly redeeming himself for that earlier clanger. Messi wins back the ball halfway inside his own half and gets Barca on the move.
19 min: CHANCE! Best chance of the game. Alves gets in a cross from the right, Neymar gets a powerful header on it just outside the six yard box but it goes over. The Brazilian should have done far better there.
GOAL! Fernando Torres scores for Atletico (25 min)! What a crucial goal that could be. Torres (yes him) runs onto a fine through-ball right down the middle of the pitch and fires his shot through Ter Stegen's legs. Barca wide open. That's Torres's 11th goal against Barca.
48 min: After Atletico get clear again. Barcelona counter-attack. The cross finds Messi...he controls the ball with his chest before trying an acrobatic overhead kick, but his effort goes wide. What a goal that would have been.
