From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

Keep up to date with all the latest news from Euro 2020 as England prepare to face Germany with Wales poised to kick off the round of 16 against Denmark on Saturday.

Leon Goretzka came on to their rescue Germany in the dying stages of Wednesday’s Group F conclusion, which of course means Germany travel to Wembley next Tuesday to take on England.

Though Die Mannschaft represent a tough first opponent in the knockouts, England can still count themselves lucky to have fallen on the favourable side of the draw. Wales on the other hand have a very tough run through to the latter stages of the tournament, with Denmark up first, but they also feature in the same side of the draw as France, Italy, Spain and Croatia, while Belgium take on Portugal in the standout fixture, with Cristiano Ronaldo fresh from breaking yet another international record.

Jordan Henderson, who banked a half of football in the Three Lions’ final game against Czech Republic, has moved to rally his teammates: “We’ve got quite a young squad but I think that can be a positive thing. A lot of these lads just go out and play, enjoy the game, play with no fear. And that’s what they need to do again on Tuesday. Go and enjoy it, go and show everybody how good they are. Use the emotion and passion in the right way to give you energy for the game, because that can be the difference really. As an experienced player I can help with that and make sure we’re in the right frame of mind going into the game and make sure training’s at the level it needs to be over the next few days to prepare for that one. Everybody’s confident, everybody’s feeling good and we’ve got a good few days to prepare for a huge game. But a lot of the lads have played in huge games already: Champions League finals, Champions League games, cup finals, big games for England. They’re used to big games even though they’re young and I’m sure they’re looking forward to this one.”

Euro 2020: Medical chiefs insist fans can travel safety

Medical advisors for Euro 2020 have insisted that it is safe for fans to travel around Europe to watch this summer’s tournament. One of those, Dr Daniel Koch, believes that the benefits need to be balanced as they are for other industries.

“Every day, a lot of lorry drivers are running around Europe thousands and thousands every day, and they are not tested, they are not restricted,” he said.

“Europe is interconnected, it’s heavily interconnected, the virus will not stop at the borders. We can restrict it but we cannot avoid it. I think that’s why we have to be in a balance.

“The sports, and all these issues, have to be in a balance. And if you put all this in balance I think there is no question that just this few thousand people travelling to the football matches are not making the difference.”

Euro 2020: Jordan Henderson on Kalvin Philips

“Kalvin’s a very good player – I think you’ve seen that in the games that he’s played. Not only for Leeds, but for England.

“He’s done fantastically well, he’s a great lad to have around so he’s been great. We’ve got a lot of good players in midfield though: Declan Rice, Jude Bellingham, who’s done brilliantly this season and done well when he’s come on as well, Mason Mount.

“There’s a lot of talented players in the midfield area so we keep pushing each other in training but also get on really well which is important.

“Whoever the manager decides to play, I’m sure that we’ll give absolutely everything and there will be a good balance in midfield.

Euro 2020: Jordan Henderson on the importance of mental strength

“I think we have shown over recent years that there’s a lot of that in our game now: how we manage games, how we see games out, how we keep playing to the end. The penalty shootout was a big one.

“I do think we’ve improved in that, definitely. I feel as though we’ve got a lot of players that are mentally strong so that will definitely help us on Tuesday.”

Euro 2020: Henderson on rectifying lack of goals

“I don’t think we need to get too caught up about it. Clean sheets are also a big part of football, especially in tournament football so that’s been a really positive thing that we need to keep.

“We’d like to score more goals. We’ve got world-class players in the forward positions and we know that if we create chances then they’ll score goals so I’m not too worried about that.”

Euro 2020: Henderson on returning from injury

“It’s always difficult with injuries. The toughest part of being an athlete is dealing with injuries.

“It was tough dealing with that but you always seem to come out of it. stronger with the amount of work you do in the gym, and in training...

“It was great to get on the pitch finally in a competitive game and get 45 minutes under my belt. I feel really good.”

Euro 2020: Henderson on what it would mean to beat Germany

“It would mean everything to us to get into the next round of the tournament. To beat Germany is special as well because they’re a fantastic team and it would mean everything to us as a squad to be able to progress...

“All we can do is give everything and hopefully that will be enough.”

Euro 2020: Henderson on if they’ve spoken about the Euro 96’ shootout

“We haven’t spoken about it and I’m not sure we will either. Obviously a lot of talk will be on penalties for us.

“For us, we’ve been in a penalty shootout not long ago and we practice them all the time.”

Euro 2020: Henderson on the increased Wembley capacity

“Hopefully that can be a big positive for us and we can use that to the best that we can.

“Having the fans back has been great for us... as players we need to give the fans something to shout about.

“With that number doubled, hopefully the atmosphere will be even better.”

Euro 2020: Jordan Henderson on playing Germany

“We’ve got a good few days to prepare after the game the other night.

“You’re into the knockout stages, if you win you go through to the next stage and if you lose then you’re out.

“We’re into the nitty-gritty of the tournament... come Tuesday, we’ve got to give everything on the pitch.

“It’s a special game. In recent years, you look at the one where there was a goal that was over the line and wasn’t given.

“It’s very exciting. Everybody will be looking forward to it now. For the players, you’ve just got to make sure you stay focused.”
