This election is still a dead heat, according to most polls. In a fight with such wafer-thin margins, we need reporters on the ground talking to the people Trump and Harris are courting. Your support allows us to keep sending journalists to the story.

Follow live coverage after Crystal Palace faced Tottenham Hotspur today in the Premier League. Another top-flight season will be covered in full right here with The Independent, as reigning champions Manchester City look to make it an unprecedented five titles in a row come the end of 2024/25.

The hosts had made a disappointing start to the new campaign and Oliver Glasner was coming under some pressure, despite last year’s excellent form to end the season. But this result will go some way to easing those concerns, as Palace beat Spurs 1-0 thanks to Jean-Philippe Mateta’s strike, buried from the left side of the six-yard box after Eberechi Eze’s brilliant flick.

For Spurs it’s a missed opportunity to keep a recent consistent run going and move up into the top six, leaving Ange Postecoglou needing to answer more uncomfortable questions about his side’s inability to string results together. Follow all the reaction below.

As the clock ticks down, Tottenham are struggling to create any clear cut chances. Glasner's side have defended resolutely and have barely given Spurs a sniff in this second half. The Eagles are 15 minutes away plus added time from a huge victory.

The half-time whistle blows at Selhurst Park as Palace head into the break 1-0 up thanks to Mateta’s finish. The hosts have looked the far more confident team in the opening 45 minutes as the Eagles search for their first league win of the Premier League season. There’s work to do for Ange Postecoglou at the break with Spurs devoid of ideas. The Opta predictor has Crystal Palace as overwhelming favourites to take the three points from here with a 54% chance, while the visitors have a 18% chance of coming from behind and winning the game.

WHAT A SAVE! Henderson gets down quickly to prevent Maddison finding the net from inside the box. Udogie finds the number 10 with a delivery into the box. The 27-year-old tries to convert but the Palace goalkeeper gets fingertips to the ball to keep it out. That looked like a certain goal.

LUCKY! Already booked, Kulusevski takes an unnecessary risk as the Swede kicks out at Mitchell after a coming together. That could have been a second yellow on a different day.

Oliver Glasner's side have played on the front foot in the opening 45 minutes and Spurs have struggled to live with their energy and high pressing. Ange Postecoglou will have a lot to think about at half-time.
