Newcastle United extended their unbeaten Premier League run to a club record 15 matches and recorded a sixth successive clean sheet despite being held to a 0-0 draw at Crystal Palace.

The point from a disappointing clash was enough for Newcastle to move back into third place in the standings above Manchester United, who play Arsenal on Sunday.

Eddie Howe’s side dominated in the first half with Joelinton twice having good chances, but they struggled to open up a dogged Palace side after the break at Selhurst Park.

Palace, who lost talisman Wilfried Zaha to a hamstring injury in the second half, came close when Jean-Philippe Mateta drew a great save from Newcastle keeper Nick Pope. In the end a draw was just about a fair result.

The draw takes Newcastle into third place for the time being as Manchester United are yet to play this weekend. Crystal Palace remain 12th but create a bit more space between themselves and the relegation battle. The Eagles travel to Old Trafford for their next league game while Newcastle face Southampton in the EFL Cup semi-finals.

It was a fairly quiet half in terms of chances but Newcastle controlled play for most of it. They showed why they have the best defensive record in the league as Palace failed to even register a shot on target. Joelinton and Burn both tested Guaita in the home goal but the goalkeeper was equal to everything that came at him. The Eagles were frustrated with the referee as they felt too many decisions were going in favour of the visitors. The second period followed the same pattern, but the hosts were a bit more threatening. Pope was forced into a good save to keep out Mateta’s thunderous strike while Guaita made seven saves at the other end as the game finished 0-0.
