It was not pretty and, when Jorginho hopped, skipped and fluffed an 87th-minute penalty, it looked like it would not come at all. But Chelsea were able to squeeze out a narrow 1-0 victory over West Ham thanks to Christian Pulisic’s 90th-minute winner in a match that will not last long in the memory.

The goal itself was smartly constructed and taken. On as a second-half substitute, Pulisic timed and adjusted a run into the box to get on the end of Marcos Alonso’s cut-back, after Mason Mount had carried the ball forward in desperation. The American stroked a finish into the far corner from his left foot for his fourth goal of the Premier League campaign. The equalling of last season’s tally that little bit less important than the end of a run two successive home deafest, and a much-needed clean sheet after shipping four goals in both.

Thomas Tuchel was relieved rather than buoyed. This was not a display to hang your hat on, and it is hard to think of a player beyond the usual suspects of Mount and Thiago Silva who emerged with any top-up of credit. But the three points re-establishes distance between them and Arsenal - now five points, with a game in hand. Follow all the team news, build-up and latest scores from all three games below:

Liverpool 0-0 Everton

60 mins: Naby Keita and Sadio Mane make way for Divock Origi and Luis Diaz.

Jurgen Klopp rolling the dice.

Liverpool 0-0 Everton

60 mins: Alexander-Arnold whips a delightful cross into the box and it’s only half cleared. It falls to Robertson who tries his luck from the edge of the area but Coleman knocks it behind for a corner.

Everton hack the corner clear and here come the Liverpool changes...

Liverpool 0-0 Everton

58 mins: Everton are taking more risks now and that could ultimately play into Liverpool’s hands as there will be more space in behind.

Gordon breaks yet again for Everton though! He knocks the ball brilliantly past Keita and Alexander-Arnold cynically takes him out. The most stonewall yellow card you will ever see.

Liverpool are not comfortable in this game. Anthony Gordon is becoming the star of this match.

The resulting free-kick is glanced on by Iwobi but no-one is there to meet it.

Liverpool 0-0 Everton

56 mins: Frank Lampard was fuming about that penalty call. You feel if it had been given then it would not have been overturned.

Meanwhile, Gordon gets in behind again! He spins Matip and tries to pick out the far corner with a low shot but poorly drags it well wide.

Everton need to take chances like those.

Liverpool 0-0 Everton

54 mins: Penalty shout for Everton. Iwobi feeds Gordon on the break and Matip comes across with his arm to bring down the Everton man. The referee is unmoved.

There is a case for that being a penalty, but I’m not sure there was quite enough in it. Borderline.

Liverpool 0-0 Everton

53 mins: Lovely link-up play from Liverpool as Matip, Keita and Jota all exchange neat passes on the edge of the box before it fails to fall for Mane.

The hosts need more of that if they are going to pull Everton out of position and create the openings.

Liverpool 0-0 Everton

52 mins: Liverpool pile forward and leave themselves exposed whe Doucoure feeds Iwobi down the left. It’s two-on-two but Iwobi can’t find a way past Matip who stands him up superbly.

Already more space for both sides since the break.

Liverpool 0-0 Everton

50 mins: Everton have been pinned in at the start of this second half and the Liverpool fans are sensing that this could be the moment to break the visitors’ resolve.

Salah chops a pass outside to Alexander-Arnold but his cross is into the arms of Pickford - who proceeds to kill another 15 or 20 seconds.

Dylan Terry24 April 2022 17:39

Liverpool 0-0 Everton

48 mins: Robertson swings the corner in and Holgate rises to head clear. It’s only as far as Keita though as the Liverpool midfielder tries his luck on the half volley but it swings wide of the post.

Dylan Terry24 April 2022 17:37

Liverpool 0-0 Everton

47 mins: Everton straight back into their low block as Liverpool probe for an opener. It’s a case of as you were for both teams, with neither manager making any personnel changes either.

Robertson forces a corner off Gray and the Kop are in full voice.
