An injury-time equaliser from Casemiro earned Manchester United a point at Chelsea on Saturday in the Premier League battle for fourth place.

The Brazilian’s headed ball was pushed on to the post by Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa and it just crossed the line to make the score 1-1.

The two sides had been heading for a lively if disjointed goalless draw until an 87th-minute Jorginho penalty looked to have settled the match in Chelsea‘s favour.

The result keeps Chelsea in fourth place, a point ahead of United. The Manchester side and France’s World Cup squad will be concerned for Raphael Varane, who went over on his ankle midway through the second half and limped away looking distraught.

Towering Casemiro header denies Chelsea as Manchester United snatch point after late drama

It was almost as Cristiano Ronaldo might have imagined. The serial Champions League winner, the Real Madrid great, the best player on the pitch, salvaging a point with a glorious, dramatic, looping header. Except, as Ronaldo languished in exile, banished from the squad for his insubordination on Wednesday, it was Casemiro celebrating his first Manchester United goal.

He deserved it. He was arguably the player of the match against both Tottenham and Chelsea, but if he had a rival for that title at Stamford Bridge, it was Kepa Arrizabalaga, who almost clawed Casemiro’s header to safety, whose resistance had ensured Chelsea preserved parity in a first half United dominated and who was seconds from a sixth successive clean sheet.

Graham Potter was denied, too, almost becoming the first manager since Andy Aitken since 1908-09 to beat United in a top-flight season with two different clubs. Potter changed the game with his changes but Erik ten Hag emerged with credit, too. United were terrific at the start. Ronaldo might argue they could have benefited from the services of a finisher with, say, 817 career goals as they lacked a clinical touch, but there were signs a side is being shaped with a collective ethos and a dash of class.

‘Lots of positives’ says Potter

Graham Potter says he saw lots of positives from his teams performance despite Chelsea conceding a very late goal and settling for a point against Man Utd.

He told the BBC: “Lots of positives in terms of the amount of effort the boys put into the game. Manchester United were better than us for the first 30 minutes and we had to respond and I felt we did that.

“It wasn’t from a lack of trying. The boys gave everything, when you score as late as you do there is a feeling you’ve dropped points but over the course of the game a point is probably about right.

“When we scored, because of how hard fought it has been it is hard to control things going into the box. We have to accept the point and dust ourselves down to go again on Tuesday.

“I can’t stand here and say we deserved to win. The two teams had a go and a point is about right.”

Post-match reaction from Fernandes

Manchester United captain, Bruno Fernandes, spoke to Sky Sports after the match and said: “We had chances in the first half and could have been 2-0 up. They got the goal from the penalty but we kept fighting. We got the point, it isn’t what we want but we never gave up.

“The best chances we had we couldn’t score. We kept fighting and working.

“I said to the referee that in the Premier League this kind of contact is every game. I didn’t see it [McTominay’s foul that led to the penalty], I can’t say if it was right or not. Scott said he was not holding him. I don’t know.

“It was a great cross from Luke Shaw and a great header by Casemiro [for United’s goal]. We know he has that, he scored many goals against Real Madrid. It was a fantastic goal.

“We don’t talk about that [Ronaldo’s situation]. We keep it inside. We have to deal with that inside and no one else has to know what we want or think. The most important thing for everyone including Cristiano is that the team wins.”

Full-time: Chelsea 1-1 Man Utd

90+6 mins: That’s it! Casemiro’s late goal rescues a point for Manchester United after Scott McTominay had given away a penalty that Jorginho slotted home.

Chelsea remain fourth, Man Utd stay fifth and there’s just one point between the teams. This one will feel like a win for the visitors and Casemiro is to thank for that.

What drama.

GOAL! Chelsea 1-1 Man Utd (Casemiro, 90+4)⚽️

90+4 mins: Equaliser!

Luke Shaw swings the ball in from the left side and floats the cross over to the arriving Casemiro on the opposite side of the box. He leaps in front of Scott McTominay and powerful nods the ball at goal.

Kepa gets a touch but only manages to palm the ball onto the inside of the far post where the ball then trickles over the line!

Chelsea 1-0 Man Utd

90+3 mins: Chelsea have a lead to defend so Man Utd are going to see the majority of possession for the final few minutes. Bruno Fernandes puts a couple of crosses into the box but both are headed away.

United recover it and work the ball down the left side. Elanga drives up to the box and pulls the ball back but doesn’t pick out a team mate.

Chelsea 1-0 Man Utd

90 mins: United have lost their heads now. Luke Shaw takes out Cesar Azpilicueta and earns himself a yellow card. Erik ten Hag looks like a bastion of controlled anger with his arms crossed on the sidelines.

United’s only lifeline is that there will be six minutes of added time.
