Tuchel on Chelsea form and Malmo

Chelsea achieved a dominant group-stage win against Malmo in the Champions League on Wednesday evening, sweeping aside the Swedish team 4-0 at Stamford Bridge.

Impressive in attack right from kick-off, Thomas Tuchel’s side opened the scoring through Andreas Christensen after just 10 minutes, when the centre-back shinned home a volley for his first goal in Chelsea colours. The Blues then doubled their advantage from the spot midway through the first half, as Jorginho opted against his usual skip to smash a penalty past Malmo goalkeeper Johan Dahlin following a foul on Romelu Lukaku.

That challenge marked the end of Lukaku’s evening, with the striker soon limping down the tunnel. There was also an early exit for Timo Werner, who seemed to succumb to a hamstring issue on the cusp of half-time. Thankfully for Chelsea, they continued to thrive on the pitch, beginning the second half with a third goal courtesy of Kai Havertz, who produced a delightful, clipped finish. Before too long, Jorginho rounded out the scoring by netting another penalty after Antonio Rudiger was fouled while taking a shot.

Follow all the fallout from Chelsea’s group-stage victory over Malmo, below.

Chelsea 3-0 Malmo

53 mins: A lovely dribble from Kante is brought to an end following a cynical challenge from Christiansen, who is rightly booked. Mount takes the free kick from 25 yards but thrashes it straight into the Malmo wall.

Chelsea 3-0 Malmo

50 mins: Close! This could be anything now, Chelsea are showing no signs of slowing down. Mount flashes a wicked ball across the face, but it evades everyone and runs out for a throw. It was perhaps a bit too high for those in the middle.

GOAL! Chelsea 3-0 Malmo (HAVERTZ 48’)

Brilliant goal! Hudson-Odoi leads the Chelsea break as he carries the ball the full length of the field before slipping in Havertz. Hudson-Odoi’s ball was slightly overhit, which forced Havertz to clip the ball over the goalkeeper from a tight angle. Super finish.

Half time: Chelsea 2-0 Malmo

Saul Niguez was warming up at half time. With Chelsea in such a comfortable position, this would be a good opportunity to offer the midfielder some minutes. He’s made just two appearances for Chelsea so far since joining from Atletico Madrid on loan.

The teams are back out for the second half.

HALF TIME: Chelsea 2-0 Malmo

Elsewhere in the Champions League, Juventus are drawing with Zenit St Petersburg in the other match in Group H, while Manchester United are trailing Atalanta 2-0 at Old Trafford in what could be another damaging defeat for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

HALF TIME: Chelsea 2-0 Malmo

A great half from Chelsea, soured by the injuries to Lukaku and Werner. Tuchel’s side have looked like European champions again and Malmo have barely offered a punch in response following a dominant first-half performance from the Blues.

Andreas Christensen opened the scoring with his first Chelsea goal before Jorginho doubled their lead from the spot. Lukaku was injured in winning the penalty following a nasty challenge from behind, before Werner pulled up with a hamstring problem.

Concern for Tuchel, then, but as far as tonight is concerned his side are in a comfortable position and look to be heading to six points in Group H.

Chelsea 2-0 Malmo

45+2 mins: Hudson-Odoi gets a couple of touches around the Malmo box but Chelsea’s attack breaks down shortly before half-time. It’s a big second half for the England forward, as well.

Chelsea 2-0 Malmo

45 mins: Havertz curls the ball over the bar from outside of the box. He was looking for the top corner with his left foot, and wasn’t too far away.

There will be three minutes of time added on following those injuries to Lukaku and Werner.

Chelsea 2-0 Malmo

43 mins: Werner can’t continue and is set to be replaced by Callum Hudson-Odoi. The forward indicated immediately that something was wrong and Werner has joined Lukaku by limping straight down the tunnel under assistance from the Chelsea doctors.
