Chelsea responded to their defeat in the Carabao Cup final with a determined and steadfast performance at Stamford Bridge to defeat Leeds.

The visitors started the more aggressive team and took advantage of an Axel Disasi mistake to notch up the first goal as Mateo Joseph slotted home past the restored Robert Sanchez inside the opening 10 minutes. However, it wasn’t long before Nicolas Jackson found the equaliser with a smooth finish from the right side of the box.

Chelsea then took the lead through Mykhailo Mudryk who excelled in the No. 10 role throughout the night. After the break, Chelsea started slowly once more and again they were punished. Joseph leaping behind Trevoh Chalobah to nod home an equaliser.

Things were level for almost 20 minutes until Conor Gallagher, freshly brought on from the bench, spun away from Junior Firpo to lift a shot over Illan Meslier and send Chelsea into the quarter-finals.

Conor Gallagher’s last-minute winner cements his place as Chelsea’s next midfield hero

Chelsea survived an FA Cup scare as Conor Gallagher came off the bench to score a last-minute winner and seal a 3-2 victory over Leeds at Stamford Bridge.

The substitute lashed the ball past the visitors’ goalkeeper Illan Meslier to grab what had looked an unlikely victory for much of the game, never more so than when the Blues fell behind inside eight minutes to the first of two goals from Mateo Joseph.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side rallied and looked to have put their woeful start behind them when first Nicolas Jackson and then Mykhailo Mudryk netted to send them in 2-1 up at the break.

Chelsea 2-2 Leeds

74 mins: Chance! Leeds fizz the ball into the box from the right wing. Trevoh Chalobah misses the ball and it hits Mateo Joseph on the head.

He’s not expecting the ball to reach him so is surprised when it does. The means he reacts slowly and the ball rolls away enough for Chelsea to clear.

Chelsea 2-2 Leeds

68 mins: Liam Cooper lunges into a tackle on Raheem Sterling but the referee judges the challenge to be a fair one which annoys the watching home fans.

Sterling is on his feet in a jiffy though and doesn’t look too hard done by.
