Never a positive to not be in Europe - Potter

A first-half goal from Raheem Sterling and a controversial penalty by Kai Havertz overturned a first-leg deficit and propelled Chelsea into the Champions League quarter-finals with a 2-1 aggregate win over Borussia Dortmund.

Just as they had in Germany three weeks ago when Dortmund won 1-0, 2021 champions Chelsea squandered chance after chance in the first half, with Germany’s Havertz hitting the post. But in the 43rd minute, Ben Chilwell crossed into the box and found England teammate Sterling.

Sterling air-kicked his first effort, then sidestepped Marco Reus and sent his second high into the net to put the teams level on aggregate.

Early in the second half a Chilwell cross smacked into the outstretched hand of defender Marius Wolf and Dutch referee Danny Makkelie gave the penalty after being called to the VAR screen. Havertz hit the keeper’s left-hand post and play resumed for a few seconds until VAR alerted Makkelie that Dortmund players had encroached into the area. Havertz retook the kick and sent the ball the same way but this time it squeezed inside the post for a 53rd-minute strike.

It was Dortmund’s first defeat following wins in their previous 10 matches and a boost for Chelsea, who have struggled for form under Graham Potter since the turn of the year. Relive all the action as Chelsea host Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League last 16:

Chelsea defeat Borussia Dortmund 2-1 on aggregate to reach Champions League quarter-finals

This is a fantastic result for Chelsea. There’s a wave of relief echoing around Stamford Bridge as the Blues reach the next round.

Graham Potter needed this win, he’s come under pressure for Chelsea’s poor domestic form but this victory could be the catalyst to spur them onto bigger and better things.

How far can Chelsea go in this competition?

Full-time: Chelsea 2-0 Dortmund (2-1 agg)

90+8 mins: Chelsea have done it!

A wonderful European night at Stamford Bridge ends in the correct result. The Blues dominated the first hour of this game and earned their rewards - though they got lucky with a retaken penalty.

Still, Chelsea had to overcome a deficit in order to get into the last eight and they did it. This is by far Graham Potter’s best result as Chelsea boss.

His team have back-to-back wins and are into the Champions League quarter-finals!

90+6 mins: Marco Reus goes down in the Chelsea box as a shot is deflected out for a corner. The cross is headed out to Emre Can who knocks the ball over to Reyna on the right.

His chip back into the box drops to Wolf but Kepa gets behind the defender’s side footed shot.

The six minutes are up so we’re now into added time of stoppage time.

90+3 mins: Wolf and Chilwell get into a bit of a barney and Chilwell is booked from running the ball away and delaying a restart. This will be a massive win for Graham Potter if Chelsea can get over the line.

There’s three or so minutes to go.

Chelsea 2-0 Dortmund (2-1 agg)

88 mins: A long cross from Sule comes into the box and flies over the head of Reece James. Reyna keeps it play just before the ball crosses the byline then flicks a cross of his own into the middle which is nodded away by James.

There are a lot of nervous looking faces in the crowd now. Chelsea are hanging on to this lead.

Chelsea 2-0 Dortmund (2-1 agg)

85 mins: Reyna is fouled by Gallagher after giving the ball away to the Blues. Instead of a Chelsea counter-attack, Dortmund win a free kick in a dangerous area.

Guerreiro once again lifts the ball into the box but Chelsea boot it away.

Chelsea 2-0 Dortmund (2-1 agg)

82 mins: There are a couple of substitutions for Chelsea now. Raheem Sterling, who got the ball rolling for Chelsea, is replaced with Christian Pulisic as Mateo Kovacic goes off for Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

There’ll be a bunch of stoppage time added on at the end of the 90 so there’s still around 10 minutes or so of this match to play.

Chelsea 2-0 Dortmund (2-1 agg)

79 mins: That’s a waste. Borussia Dortmund win a free kick just outside the Chelsea penalty area. It’s a similar position to the one in which Marco Reus troubled Kepa Arrizabalaga in the first half.

This time Raphael Guerreiro flicks the ball into the danger zone but the Blues clear their lines without too much trouble.
