Six minutes added on at Prenton Park.

Newcastle remain just a goal up at Tranmere heading into the final 15 minutes.

They are one of several teams who could really do with a cup run this season.

If they get through tonight it will be just the second time in six seasons in which they have progressed into the third round of the Carabao Cup.

And just like Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard was pleased with the attitude of his Everton side as they made it through to the third round of the Carabao Cup by overcoming League One Fleetwood 1-0 at Highbury.

A first-half goal from Demarai Gray, who was a late addition to the Everton starting line-up after Tom Davies was injured in the warm-up, gave the Toffees victory but Lampard admitted his side had to work hard.

He said: “I was really pleased with the attitude but the intensity and quality at times wasn’t as good as it should have been and we should have controlled the game better. It was a good indicator of where we are at the moment because we know we have to improve but it was good to get through.”

Gray’s goal came after 28 minutes with a neat finish from the left-hand side of the box but Everton were thankful to goalkeeper Asmir Begovic for fine saves from Cian Hayes and Toffees defender Reece Welch, who sent a looping header towards his own goal.

The Carabao Cup can offer under-pressure Premier League managers the chance to get a morale-boosting victory early in the season, and Steven Gerrard was pleased to see his Aston Villa side come from behind to defeat Bolton last night.

After a frustrating start to the season and a tough run of fixtures in the coming weeks, a cup shock at the University of Bolton Stadium on Tuesday could have made life uncomfortable for Villa and Gerrard.

Yet despite falling behind to their determined League One opponents, the Premier League outfit produced a strong performance to ease into the third round.

“You are always looking for the right reaction and response,” said Gerrard, thinking back to Saturday’s defeat at Crystal Palace. “The players and I know that the performance and result at the weekend were not good enough.

“We set them a challenge to qualify for the next round and put themselves in the best possible place for West Ham. That is a huge game for us now at the weekend but we can go there now with a bit more confidence and belief.”

There was a good line from West Ham boss David earlier today, whose side are in European action tomorrow night in their Conference League play-off against Viaborg so enter the Carabao Cup draw tonight.

Moyes said fans would “burst out laughing” if they knew who West Ham had bid for this summer and admitted he has lost count of the number of players they’ve targeted.

Moyes confirmed the club have put in bids for Club Brugge’s Hans Vanaken and Lyon’s Lucas Paqueta and said they have been ambitious in chasing big-name players.

Exciting times for the Hammers, perhaps?
