What a thrilling afternoon it has been! Burnley were staying up until the 20th minute when Callum Wilson scored his first goal and it looked sweet for Leeds when Raphinha slotted a penalty.

Things went from bad to worse for Burnley when Wilson scored again but there was some hope when Canos equalised against Leeds.

But Jack Harrison’s late strike sealed the win and Premier League status for Jesse Marsch’s side. For a recap of all the action you need to see, read Lawrence Ostlere’s report:

Burnley have apologised to fans for their relegation to the Championship. They join Norwich and Watford in playing in the second tier next season and it will hurt even more as they didn’t sit in the relegation zone before today’s match.

They were 17th thanks to goal difference but two Wilson goals sunk their hopes.

The club have publicly shared apologies with fans on Twitter, posting: “This is not the outcome we wanted and for that we are sorry. You gave everything at Turf Moor today and you’ve been with us every step of the way - for that we couldn’t be more grateful.”

Leeds manager Jesse Marsch has credited his team’s mentality for their Premier League win.

It was all in Burnley’s hands heading into the match, as the club had a greater goal difference. Leeds had to better Burnley’s result in order to stay up and that’s exactly what they did, with Burnley losing to Newcastle.

Marsch told Sky Sports: “Hot day - not easy for either team. We got the lead which was important, I thought the start was really good. When we were up two men we still didn’t want to leave it up to fate, we tried to push the winner to secure our fate. This group has been able to dig deep in injury time and find goals and the character is clear and it’s a privilege to work with these guys.

“We talked about how to play in the heat, how to manage the game, how to stay focussed for every moment. Weird that we gave up a goal when we went up a man.

“We tried to update the players on the Burnley score but the focus on us was most important. It’s hard to concentrate and be connected for 90 minutes on days like this but this is typical of our group - they never stop believing and it’s a credit to our mentality.”

Mike Jackson took over Burnley after Sean Dyche was fired but has failed to keep the club in the Premier League.

He has spoken on his future and about how “gutted” he is for the club, players and staff in his post-match interview.

Burnley interim manager Mike Jackson told Match of the Day: “It’s raw, we’ve got a group of players who are gutted. I don’t think there is any other word to say about that. The effort they’ve put in since we came in has been brilliant. Today we’ve come out on the wrong side of chasing the game. We had some really good chances but couldnt take them.

“There wasn’t much in the game but we gave the penalty away and they could sit in a bit more. You end up chasing it and don’t get the rhythm.

“There is a lot of emotion in it. I’m gutted for everyone involved but proud as well as I couldn;’t have asked any more from them.

And he added on the fans: “They stuck with us even at the end. It’s their club. we’re gutted we couldn’t give thme what they wanted. I hope they saw a group that was fighting for them.”

And on his future, he said: “I’ve not thought about my future. I’m too gutted about what’s just happened and that’s going to take a long time to get over.”

Jesse Marsch took over from Marcelo Bielsa in February and was tasked with keeping the club in the Premier League. Today he secured the goal and his celebrations displayed just how much it meant to him.

He has been insistant about staying next season and he continued to share that opinion in his post-match interview.

Marsch told Sky Sports: “It wasn’t easy to manage and I was trying to think of ways to help the group tactically and to be fair we have had good performances it’s just trying to put it all together hasn’t always looked perfect. The stress has been high for three months, I’ve tried to stay calm and focus on us and you see the quality of the mentality and character.

“There’s so much been said about Marcelo Bielsa v me and there’s been people counting us out, I get it, this is high level stuff, and fans pay attention all over the world. It’s not a perfect representation of what I want this team to be but in this situation we came together well and I still feel strongly about the group we have and the football we can play. We need to get better and add some pieces but I love this group, team, character, commitment and spirit.

“We were with our fans enough and I appreciate the fans singing my name but that’s not the important thing. We are Leeds United and that’s what we will always be as long as I am here - I love our fans but I don’t care if they sing my name. It’s important we are a committed group and show us that every time on the pitch.”

Burnley will play in the Championship next season after they were beaten by Newcastle. They had to either equal or better Leeds’ performance and they couldn’t get it over the line.

Players have been speaking to the media and the heartbreak felt by the club was evident.

Burnley defender James Tarkowski said: “We’re devastated but over the season we’ve not been good enough. We need to be better than we have been and we’ve got our just reqwards by not doing enough.

“We have had too many sloppy moments and not won enough matches. We’ve had an incredible run in this league against these teams and their budgets. It’s been a great achievement but that doesn’t mean we wanted it to end in the way we have done.

“There is never a lack of effort or desire from our team but we have just lacked individual quality in front of goal. We’ve given it our all. There is a great set of lads in there who’ve never given up but unfortunately we have come up short. It summed up our season.”

And he added on the fans: “They’ve been incredible ever since I’ve come here. They’ve been brilliant this season. It’s easy to turn against team when they are struggling but they have been with us all the way.

“I can only apologise we’ve not done enough this season.”

Leeds players have been reacting to the fact they will be playing in the Premier League next season.

It was a tight affair this afternoon but their 2-1 victory was enough to keep them up.

Leeds captain Liam Cooper speaking to Sky Sports: “Unbelievable - at the start of the season we set out for a lot better than that but after all the adversity we’ve faced our backs have been against the wall. That is a success in itself today, I’m not one for celebrating things like that but after what we’ve faced this season I will celebrate that. It was hectic and what a finish for the winner.

“We were aware of the Burnley score and every 10 mins I was asking the bench what the score. I need to apologise to my Mrs and kids over the last six weeks, it’s been stressful I won’t lie.

“We come in every day and work hard and if you keep working hard then things come off. That’s for the fans, they’ve stuck with us all season, the atmosphere has been unbelievable and they don’t deserve us at times. I hope they all get home safely today because they got us through that today.”

And goalscorer Jack Harrison added: “Through the game getting the first goal and that being offside then trying to get that second one was tough. Fortunately enough it went in at the end - exhilarating game, up and down, but we’ve been like that all season and now we’vecome out on top.

“An epitome of this squad that the injured players still come and support - out injured and operations but somehow they still find a way to get to the game and support the team. It’s a credit to the group to keep pushing when they’re facing the toughest of times.”

Look away now Burnley fans as the scenes were very different at the Community Stadium.

When the full-time whistle was blown and all phones had been checked for that crucial Burnley result, the place went crazy!

No pitch invasions from what I saw but some wholesome celebrations with the players who have kept the club up, following a hit and miss season.

This must be heartbreaking for Burnley who headed into the day out of the relegation zone.

They went 2-0 down but managed to pull a goal back through Cornet. They couldn’t get two more which would have secured top flight football for them and the pictures emerging from the match sums up the mood.
