Champions Manchester City’s 12-match winning streak in the Premier League came to an end as they were held to a 1-1 draw at Brighton , who secured Europa League football for next season.

Treble-chasing City, who wrapped up a fifth title in six seasons at the weekend, lacked their usual intensity but took the lead when Phil Foden slotted home in the 25th minute.

Brighton have sealed sixth-place and the club’s first venture into Europe, and showed why with some vibrant football and Julio Enciso equalised for the hosts with a stunning long-range effort in the 38th minute.

Danny Welbeck had a goal ruled out before halftime for Brighton and Erling Haaland thought he had put City ahead late on but was penalised for shirt-pulling after a VAR check.

It was the first time since February that City had dropped points and with one league game left at Brentford on Sunday they have 89 points, eight more than Arsenal.

Follow all the action as Brighton host Man City in the Premier League:

Brighton 1-1 Man City

44 mins: Disallowed goal! Brighton score again thanks to a threaded pass from Estupinan who slips the ball into the box for Danny Welbeck.

The forward gets in behind then drills a left-footed shot past Stefan Ortega only for the offside flag to go up.

Brighton 1-1 Man City

42 mins: Brighton seem full of confidence now. A free kick is dinked to Pervis Estupinan who jogs into the penalty area and looks to cross it over to the far post.

Riyad Mahrez gets in the way and deflects it behind for a corner. There’s a quick VAR check for handball but nothing comes from it.

GOAL! Brighton 1-1 Man City (Enciso, 38’)⚽️

38 mins: What a strike!

Julio Enciso take a bow. He’s miles out from goal when he collects the ball and nudges it towards the box. About 25-yards out his unleashes a lovely strike that curls just enough to finish inside the right hand post and rocket into the back of the net.

Fantastic equaliser.

Brighton 0-1 Man City

34 mins: Although the goal didn’t stand, Brighton will take heart that they’re improving in this game. They’re seeing more of the ball in City’s half and have created a couple of decent chances.

City look slightly off their best at the minute.

Brighton 0-1 Man City

31 mins: Disallowed goal! Kaoru Mitoma thinks he’s got the equaliser but his effort has been ruled out! Brighton win a corner that gets swung into the box.

Danny Welbeck wins the initial header and nods it to the back post where Mitoma arrives and pokes it at goal. Stefan Ortega keeps it out but Mitoma falls onto the ball and scoops it over the line with his right arm.

It’s totally accidental as he braced himself to hit the floor but nonetheless the goal doesn’t stand.

Brighton 0-1 Man City

28 mins: Phil Foden loves a goal against Brighton. He’s now scored in all five of his starts against the Seagulls. So far, Foden’s been the best player on the pitch.

Haaland looks up and spies Phil Foden in space before slipping him the pass. With Steele out of position Foden hits the ball at Jan Paul van Hecke who can’t clear it off the line and City take the lead.

Great save.

Brighton 0-0 Man City

19 mins: Crossbar! Another free kick for Brighton and this one is closer, about 25-yards out. Pascal Gross isn’t in the frame after his last effort with Danny Welbeck taking his place.

Welbeck goes for goal, lifts the ball over the wall and gets enough dip on the shot that it rattles the crossbar and bounces clear!

Mike Jones24 May 2023 20:20

Brighton 0-0 Man City

15 mins: Julio Enciso is taken out off the ball by Rodri who’s playing as a defender tonight. Brighton win a free kick about 30 yards out from goal.

Pervis Estupinan and Pascal Gross stand over the ball. It’s Gross to take it but his low effort skips straight through to Stefan Ortega in goal.
