Bryan Mbeumo’s double and a goal by Yoane Wissa earned Brentford a comfortable 3-1 home win over promoted Southampton in the Premier League, sending the visitors to the bottom of the table.
Mbeumo put the hosts in front just before halftime with a simple low finish, following up on Kevin Schade’s strike which bounced off the post.
He doubled the advantage in the 65th minute with a first-time shot into the bottom corner of the net and Wissa bundled the ball in four minutes later before Southampton pulled a goal back in stoppage time through Yukinari Sugawara.
Brentford moved up to fifth on six points while Southampton prop up the standings without a point.

Brentford on the other hand, who were the primary favourites heading into this game, were sloppy in parts, and it could be said that minutes earlier and Thomas Frank would have been the unhappier of the managers at the whistle. However, as luck would go, Mbeumo capitalised after Schade's shot hit the bar and fell to the Cameroon wingers left foot tidily inside the box and his side now have the lead. The Bees live win probability has now shot up to 74.3% as they look to manage their lead in the second half. Despite leading, their expected goal xG is at 0.97, compared to the 0.92 xG from Southampton at the break. Anything can happen in football, so never say never as the Saints need to turn this game around if they want to put their first points on the board.
Brentford vs Southampton
Southampton were the masters of their own downfall in the first half as a fairly positive half concluded with back-to-back errors that caused the hosts to capitalise. It was clear early on that they were unable to cope with the hosts pressure when they played out from the back, and eventually they were made to rue the decision to not adapt with the game. Their live win probability win rate has now plummeted to just 7.4%. A few minutes earlier, and it would be a different team talk from Martin, whereas they are now heading down the tunnel facing defeat. Despite that, they had eight chances with three on target in the first 45, so need to be more clincial in the second period to stand any chance of clinching atleast a point from this game.
